Some new photos from Fort Wayne

A Polaroid snapshot of an old, abandoned vending machine in front of a former storefront church on Wells Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It sold boxes of Hi-C fruit drink for 50 cents. The machine has not been used for many years; the boxes of Hi-C on display are faded white from age.

The church was called Living Faith Ministries.

A Polaroid snapshot of a stop sign that has been vandalized to say "Stop Obama." The funny thing is that this was done long after President Obama left office!

This sign is on Belle Vista Boulevard, at the intersection with Gates Drive, in the Waynedale area of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Waynedale was once an independent small town, but it was annexed by the city of Fort Wayne in 1957.

A Polaroid snapshot of a pair of electric rental scooters stand on the sidewalk on Wells Street, north of Fourth Street, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

These scooters are rented out through a smartphone app and are found littering the sidewalks all over Fort Wayne's downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods during the warmer months of the year.

This is a Polaroid snapshot of a tree stump in my back yard. When I was younger, this was a very tall pine tree. The house where I live used to be my grandparents' house. It is where my mother grew up.

A Polaroid snapshot of Lev's Pawn Shop on the corner of Wells Street and Third Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I photographed the store in the early evening.

A Polaroid snapshot of the creeping phlox flowers that grow in my front yard next to my driveway. These are some of the flowers still growing here that were originally planted by my grandmother. After she died, my son bought her house for us to live in.

This is a Polaroid snapshot of a couple of flowers in my front yard. The red tulip was on an unusually short stalk, and was bent over lying on one of the plant's leaves. A dandelion grows under the tulip plants.

This abandoned schoolhouse is on the south side of Convoy Road, between Werner Road and Mentzer Church Road, in rural Van Wert County, Ohio.

Unusually for a midwestern schoolhouse, this one was built with wood; most of them are brick buildings. The school is in bad condition, with weathered wood siding and doors and a sagging roof. The belfry is still in place on the roof, but the bell is missing.

I photographed a 1975 Chevy Nova here on the same day I made this photograph of the school.

This house is on Washington Street (State Road 124) in the small town of Monroe, Indiana. The house has a pallet flag, a porch swing with an American flag painted on the backrest, and two red metal motel chairs in the front yard!

This is the first of two photographs that I made of it.

A Polaroid snapshot of a tree on Arbor Avenue, south of Sandpoint Road, in my neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The bottom of the trunk has a large area of bark missing; it looks like the tree had a a split trunk, and part had broken off.

A Polaroid snapshot of a house on Arbor Avenue, south of Sandpoint Road, in my neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The house has a low hedge, trimmed to have squared-off sides and top, growing across the front yard along the road.

A Polaroid snapshot of one of the scarecrows at the Fort Wayne Community Gardens on Bluffton Road in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This one has been there for many years, with the clothing and hairstyle changing periodically! It has a plush toy rabbit hanging from its left hand.

The Community Gardens are owned by the city's Parks department. Residents can rent garden plots, which makes it possible for apartment dwellers and people with small yards to grow their own vegetables.

A Polaroid snapshot of the neon sign at the Magic Wand Restaurant in the small town of Churubusco, Indiana. I photographed it in the evening at nightfall.

Magic Wand has been in business since the 1960s and is now owned by the grandson of the original owners. My family used to go there a lot when I was a child. My son and I have been eating there for many years as well. The restaurant is located on Main Street (US-33) on the south side of Churubusco.

Whew. I'll bet the crows give that thing a wide berth!
