Can you say medium format and autofocus? You have probably seen this before but it is worth mentioning again that Leica will most likely be showing off a cool medium format sensor camera. Is there any validity to this? I guess we will have to wait a few more days.

I can say 'medium format and autofocus' but I can also say 'fairies at the bottom of the garden', 'little green men' and 'new f/1 lenses for $2000'.

In other words, I'd be astonished if there were an iota of truth in this.

Cheers,

Roger

Leica S2 rumours abound, a new digital studio-focused DSLR with more megapixels than you can shake a very large stick at. Photokina's not that far away now, so we'll see if Leica have any surprises left to spring soon enough.

At what price?

The coming Phase One P65+ will have a sensor size of 53.9mm x 40.4mm = 60.5 Megapixel with 8984 x 6732 active pixels. The P 65+ digital back starts at $39,900; the P 65+ camera system starts at $41,990. Bodies and lenses using Mamiya 645AF system.

Leica?

can't believe there rumours about MF rangefinders while there is no mention of 35mm dRFs!!

Oh.. At this stage I wouldn't be surprised about anything. There have been some major moves in recent months all of them right out of Left Field.
Right now, for Leica its all about getting from film to digital and the only way they can achieve that is through a real and competent competition camera to all the other crap out there, which equates to a full frame RF and a DSLR. As to what they come up with in the meantime, well.. I believe these are vehicles to promote prowess, re-establish market confidence and ultimately pay for the creation of new bodies...

This is a bombshell, not only the new S system but the R system most likely will have a DSLR as well. Which is a logical conclusion considering the sensor size that Leica is playing with.

Anyway, the Leica M series suddenly feels neglected and M8.2 is not full frame as well which I find shocking especially that Leica has access to a medium format size digital sensor. Has Leica abandonded the M series? It sure feels like it right now.

Obviously you didn't hear about the lens announcements last week.

mr_phillip takes the price for predicting the Leica S2 one week in advance of the magazine page leak.

They have certainly abandoned it with their R&D dollars. I'd say it is a last priority for them now. I mean, come on, they couldn't even find the money to water proof the M8.2, but they did find the money to water proof its instructions. What a hoot! 😀🙁😀 Of course, the new S2 is water proof. No one would but it otherwise. But the M8.2, no water proofing needed.

It does not depend solely on Leica. The sensor is made by Kodak and it's preliminary spec sheet was available for some time. Btw. Leica Geosystems is using the same sensor in their lidar (laser radar) camera system. Check the Kodak semiconductor web site and if you can find sensor suitable for fullframe M system, you can start mailbombing engineers in Solms.

Lidar ? isn't that what the 'Galactica'used back in the 70s before 'Dradis' ! Same old Leica now 30 years behind.😱
