Spouses Attitude Toward Photography

My partner is very supportive and is very visually oriented. She takes a much better party picture than I do and I need her suggestions in editing my pictures as I have no skills at that.

I voted for Claims to like photography but doesn’t care to learn about fundamental things like depth of field.

But, that's not entirely fair. It's not a lack of interest in basic techniques, it's more of a physical thing. On a number of occasions she has told me she seems to shut down after the third sentence on the subject of photography altogether.

And no, I'm not boring in telling about it, I'm a school teacher by profession and am able to translate and relate to my audience...

Maybe it should be documented as a disability and published in Nature😀

My girlfriend has no technical interest, or gear lust, but I suspect that's primarily a male thing anyway! However she takes great shots with her little Sony P&S, and in some ways has a better eye than me... I've decided to forbid her from using my cameras because her shots make me jealous!

In general she's supportive, and probably my most honest critic, which is useful. She bloody hates me shooting street when we're walking around together. If I stop somewhere with good light / a scene unfolding she normally just walks on in a huff! Anyone else have the same experiences with street and partners?!

PS. Loved the questions - I don't think they're condescending in the slightest, more funny. And let's be honest, who is the average member of this site?!

Once when touring one of Turkey's markets I was offered a dozen camels in exchange of my daughter. 🙂

The merchant looked like a nice guy. Perhaps he would had a better hand had he offered my daughter the goods in exchange of dating with him 😀

So why departing with a "nice CL" while by offering it directly to a nice lady you can have them both at home ?

My wife is quite a good photographer and very supportive. I met her when I was teaching photography at the local school for occupational therapists. We dated for some month (during which I gave her a used Konica T3). We met by change in a parking lot 10 years later and have been together for 12 years now. The T3 has got a place in my collection now, and my wife is shooting with an old Powershot A520 - she really has an eye for situations and also more abstract compositions, but the tech. side of photography is for her limited to changing ISO, turning on the flash on back lit subjects and understanding the function contrast detection in auto focus - man, I have failed as a teacher 😀

Interesting thread and responses. My spouse is a photo/motion picture historian and archivist. She loves photography, works for a private film and photo library. The company's got a vault under a mountain filled with glass-plate negatives, daguerreotypes, celluloid-nitrate movies, etc. They're preserving and digitizing it all for posterity. 😎
She's supports my pursuits, and thinks it's great I strictly shoot film, even though her picture-taking is strictly digital snap-shooting.
That's why I married a painter. She gets me. It helps we're both survivors/refugees of the art-school establishment.😀

My girlfriend is generally very supportive and compliments me on my photos. But then when she sees a photo of her, I often hear "you made my arms look fat. stop doing that."

She looks great, but there is just no telling her that haha. Sigh. :|

Over time I've learned not to impose my hobby on others. A few years ago I was fortunate to have been in Death Valley during the Spring wildflower season when they had a "once in a hundred year" rain (or something like that). Anyway, it was spectacular and I was encouraged to "take as many pictures as you want... take all the time you need... we're in no hurry..." Well, at the second stop I read the body language and heard a slight sigh. Third stop the sigh was louder and the body language much more pronounced. As I recall I did not stop again -- there was no joy. However, the bloom was amazingly beautiful and I am grateful to have seen it firsthand (and to cherish my three pictures of the event) 🙂.

My girlfriend likes photography, although she never actively pursued it... but anyway, she appreciates it enough that, even though I have 10 cameras (mostly cheap old bangers, but 10 nonetheless), she remains supportive. In fact, one of them is a gift from her.

I do wonder if that'll change once I start taking up precious fridge room though, I just received 25 rolls and planning to start developing my own film, she's already complaining the fridge is too small...

She hasn't complained about my photography in a long while, and she smiles a lot.

Isn't it puzzling how a few extra bucks a month can change attitudes? Hmmmm?

my fiance is a make-up artist, it's nice to have hobbies / freelance second jobs that are closely aligned and allow us to work on things together in the small amount of free time we have (which is usally taken up by the photos and MUA work, so we really have no spare time at all).

(she's taken some lovely photo on my hasselblad too, just quietly. she can't use an RF to save herself though, ha).

If possible, get a separate frige for photography materials. I use a dorm room size refrigerator. Holds 35mm, 120 rollfilm, sheet film, and cigars. 😉
