I bought a group of 9 49 mm filters from ebay about two weeks ago. When they arrived they were screwed together with caps on both ends and two of them refused to unscrew (the one I wanted the most was one of them of course). They seemed to be locked tight together. I tried differing types of pressure on the filters but got nowhere. On a whim I stuck them in the freezer hoping perhaps the contraction in the cold would loosen them up. I put them in and about 15 seconds later I realized that I had set the wrong side down on the cold surface if I wanted the male threaded portion to contract. I pulled them back out to flip them over and realized that they were loose now. I unscrewed them with ease.
It took almost no time at all to work. I'm going to remember this trick.
