I managed to fit an aftermarket hood to my Canon 135 using a stepup ring. Now I've ordered a 50 1.5 and am looking at a 35 1.8. I understand the original hoods and filters are very scarce. Does anyone know what the filter size is for these lenses and who, if anyone, has filters and aftermarket hoods available. Thank for your help.

Hi,
On the 35mm:

On the 50mm:

They both have a 40mm filter thread and these original filters are rare...
Cheers!

Thanks for this info Waus. Fortunately, 40 mm UV filters are available new - I bought one to go with my ltm Super Rokkor 85 2.8. Now that I have the size, I can also look for non-Canon hoods.

Looks like you have your answer, but if not, you might want to consider pill bottle caps. Often they can be cut inside and the top cut out, then painted with a flat black paint. I have used them for lens covers, so I don't know why they couldn't be used lens hoods.

I have both of the lenses you mention and I'm waiting on a generic hood to arrive from China. It's designed for the Fuji X10, but has a 40mm thread and takes 52mm filters, so it's quite a large diameter but not too deep. I think it may be a good solution for these lenses, but I won't know about vignetting until I have a chance to test them.

I saw those ads, too. The price is right, although the shipping is a bit steep. I would be interested to know how they work for you. I can't imagine they will vignet with the 50 but the 35 may be an issue. Thanks for the reply.
