Summaron 35mm f2.8

Summaron for the Aged

Summaron for the Aged

I bought my 2.8 in the 60's new. I have never experienced a Sumicron that made images like it. It has always been my go for lens, and now it lives on my Monochrom.

I’m enjoying the read! Thanks for sharing it! It’s one of the classic lenses I still want to get (my favorite being the Super Angulon 21).

My version 1 35 2.0 was far and away better than my 2.8 Summaron which contradicts the report in LHS publication. Maybe I had a bad sample. Regardless moved on to V4 that lives on my M8 and ASPH on all other cameras, the common ASPH version.

I couldn't tell any difference between my mk4 Summicron and my 2.8 Summaron so sold the latter. Great build quality though.

I sold my 35/2.8 many years ago and without using it even once. I was not yet into using Leica cameras, and this lens was there to be sold. I have the version 1 35/2 which does very well.

Prices for them have been all over the place. Several years ago, they were going for $600. Then they shot up to $1,200 and now seem to be $800-1,100.

I was looking for one a while ago when I came across a Summicron V1 for a similar price. I love images it produces; if I want technical excellence I can use a ZM Biogon.

First test shots with my recently acquired M3 version Summaron 35/2.8.
The lens renders beautifully in digital. Nice colors and great contrast on its own. The color image i only enhanced very little in the saturation. The black and white images have VERY minor adjustments in contrast. It is definitely a legendary lens.
Cant wait to develop my first roll with this lens! You can expect film shots with this lens sometime next week.

I compared my Summaron 2.8 (LTM version) against my versions I and IV Summicrons, and the Summaron was the best across the frame (corner to corner) from 2.8 to 5.6 after which not surprisingly all 3 were pretty similar. Both of my Summicrons were (to me) surprisingly similar in IQ

Many years ago, I switched a 35/2.8 Summaron with a 35/2 Summicron. I should have kept both.
