Summicron 35 or x100

whatever you do...do not get the x100...

before you know it the m9 will be covered in dust and you won't be able to remember why you ever bought it in the first place...;)

I sold my Summicron 35 to raise funds for the M9. It was a great lens, love the output on my M8.2 and will certainly pick up another when the time and price is right in the future.

If the M9 was my only camera and needed a backup then maybe, a slim chance, would I purchase the X100.

My preference would be to have the 35mm Cron.

Good luck with your decision.

While a used 35 ASPH would be out of the price you mention, unless you get lucky, I wouldn't want to be without it. The lens is pure excellence but then I bet the other ones would be a joy also. I would want one of the Summicrons in 35 with the M9 over another camera.

to be serious...it's all apples and peanuts...2 very different things...i have an rd1 and an assortment of small lenses...not a big package at all but huge by comparison to carrying just an x100.
are you looking for a substitute or a small image maker to carry around in a big pocket?

i would want both even though i am using the x100 almost exclusively lately. but then i can also allow myself the luxury of using only one focal length for a majority of my shots.

Sort of pointless to even consider the issue of depreciation when you are talking about digital cameras. They all depreciate.
I would imagine that a new M9 loses roughly the value of an X100 the instant you snap the first image with it.

One issue to consider. (something that's played into my own thinking) is that having an X100 also gives you a relatively inexpensive camera to tote around - for those times when you'd rather not have a $7,000 camera at your side.

Yes, there are areas I would prefer to have a good but not too expensive camera to get some shots with. That is a good point.

Get the lens. It is the investment and smart purchase there. In a few years the X100 will be out of date, but your lens will remain as awesome and relevant...

Yet the same argument would apply to the original M9 purchase - only it would be amplified. Just 4 years ago, M8s were selling for more than $4k. Today you can find them for half that price.
Don't think of your camera gear as an investment. These are photographic tools.

I agree. Not to mention, the X100's IQ is so good that you'll be able to use it for as long as you want. Sure, it might be outdated, but it won't stop being good enough.
