Summicron 50mm M

Sharper than any Summicron is the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 v1.

Leica M5, Summilux 50mm f/1.4 v1.

Thank You Charles, sweet of You !

i think you have had one too...post some photos if You can, that would be lovely 😉

My idiocy of not recording lenses on LR scans comes back to haunt me. But I remember this from the first Christmas with my M3 and the V3 Summicron. My nieces, trying to do anything other than look at their mad uncle with the junk old camera...

And an immensely rare selfie of me in the shiny chrome of a Chevy BelAir, incongruously to be found parked at the holiest of Holies, Leica Park, in the Holy City of Wetzlar, taken with said lens on an insanely bright day...

Well I've been using screw mount Leicas since '68 when I got a IIIa/withsummar
from a store for $45.
The Summicron collapsible I've got cleaned by Mr. Ye
has the radioactive front glass. Got the summicron
NOOKY and use a SBOOI with and without the NOOKY
on the black Leica II.

Does it matter which NOOKY you get with the collapsible
Summicron? I've got the one engraved 'summicron'.
But others say 'summitar' etc. I assume you have to get
the correct NOOKY as the collapsible Summicron collapses
less then for the Summitar. Most NOOKYs are for the Elmar
3.5.

I really don't know, I've never used a NOOKY. Look it up in the old manuals! Maybe the other members can tell.

Good question. I have a NOOKY (for Elmar) and NOOKY-HESUM (for Hektor, Summar & Summitar). I just discovered that my Elmar 50 2.8 LTM lens fits on the NOOKY-HESUM. I haven't shot with it yet, but I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to mount a Summicron on a NOOKY-HESUM device.

Love this thread. Love the pictures. But in all seriousness you couldn't tell the difference between a 3.5 Elmar and the newest ASPH with small pictures on a computer screen. Just my opinion of course.

I think you could say the same about 4" by 6" prints. According to the local lab that's all people want...

It would be interesting to discover the print size for each lens where it starts falling off. I suspect that few do 8" by 12" although a lot mention the cropped size of 8" by 10".

Doing 8x10 seems an odd way to use a "full frame" negative (or digital for that matter) although it does avoid the extreme edge of the lenses coverage.

I dared to have a 50mm lens comparison between over 20 lenses. RFF members mailed me their precious (valuable!) lenses to Pensacola. Roland helped a lot with the side by side images . He pointed out how good the rigid Summicron performed.

It may have been 13 years ago.

Yes Raid, i have viewed those tests many many times over the years and reman very grateful to you and Roland and the people who loaned them!

I always print the full frame on 18x24cm, about 7 to 9,5 inch, a standard size on the continent. It leaves a small white border - that I like - and a thin black line around the negative.

Bigger is nice, but unpractical. You'll understand that when you have more than 500 of 'm. And the price. One sheet of 18x24cm Adox MCC110 costs EUR 1.

I always printed 135 format full frame on 8x10 paper getting a 6x9-ish image. Any larger the print loses its splendor or lushness of tonality. Or maybe it was because I simply lacked the skills!

The Summicron takes a Sooky not a Nooky

I checked out my two rigid Summicron 50mm lenses. One was produced in 1957 and the other in 1958. They appear to have been built solidly. They certainly are beautiful.

I just sold my m9 because of lack of use. I still use my m3 and m4s. they just feel soo much better than the digital m9. anyway with the money I purchased a Leica summicron 50 version 5 for 1200$ new in box still. it is a recent one too has the 6 bit coding. I have been using my elmar M 50mm most recently. but when this lens comes in I am afraid it might get left at home. haha. I am excited because I have always wanted a cron and 50 and 28 are my fav focal lengths. I will report how I like it.

Erik, did you modify your negative carrier to allow the frame borders to show?

I like both

I like both

Which version would you buy?
Is the Rigid Summicron inferior to more modern versions?
Which is your favorite Summicron M 50mm ?

I have the 50mm rigid v2 and the 50mm v4. The rigid is softer wide open while the v4 is sharper. The v4 has noticeably greater contrast.

I like both but the v2's minimum focus distance of 1m can be a challenge at times. The v4 has half stop clicks which can give some flexibility, although the v2's full-stop only aperture clicks keep things simple, depending on your perspective.

My copy of the v2 has much smoother focus so I prefer it. At the moment, I'm keeping both 🙂

I’ve got the V3 and the V5. Both are excellent in their own right. I think I prefer the less clinical V3 in most situations.

Also have the Zeiss Sonnar ZM, which is gorgeous for people shots. Tried the Canon 1.4 LTM which was so-so (maybe I got a bad copy).

A summicron of any type will never let you down!
