1st shot is great. I know that game obessed look well from my own kids. The 3rd is good as well. I particulary like the mirroring of the bridge and reflection in the centre of frame with the OOF branch and bridge support- well spotted.

I have been thinking of buying a top notch 50mm and thought of the Summarit myself but I am veering towards a Voigtlander Nokton 1.5 at present. Your shots leave me undecided about my choice they are certainly nice and sharp.

ADORE the B&W ....tres lovely
just got a 1949 Pristine summitar...can't wait to see the results
almost finished w/ a roll

Beautiful pictures from this lens. It is certainly getting more use than I ever gave it, just too many lenses and this one was too nice to just sit.

This one has the nice round aperture, and is beautifully coated. Some internal haze came right off, left the coatings intact.

Note that this is the 5cm f2 Summitar. The name sounds much like the Summarit, the 5cm f1.5 lens. I found the character similar, the Summitar sharper at the center wide-open than the Summarit was at F2. Both have swirly Bokeh.

William,

The posted images are beautiful. Thanks.

Brian,
Is the Summitar between a Summar and a collapsible Summicron in character? That's how I view this lens.

The Summitar was introduced for color film, to correct vignetting issues of the Summar. It is much sharper and has a much larger front element. When introduced, it was stated the front element could have been used for an F1.6 lens.

The Summicron was designed using newer higher index of refraction, low-dispersion glass. I find the astigmatism (swirly Bokeh) to be almost gone in the Collapsible Summicron, and the Summicron to have better edge-to-edge sharpness. I've read on the Leica forum that many members consider the Summitar to be sharper at the center when used wide-open. I believe that is true in the case of the Thorium Summicrons.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the comments. Brian, I think we made a great deal for both of us on the two lenses. I certainly am very happy with the Summitar.

Raid, that's an interesting observation. I know that one of the things I like about the Summatar is it's slightly old fashioned rendering. Though as Brian mentions, it's color handling is very nice. Ektar certainly gets along with it and fall color ;)

I may add another 50 sometime when the price is right - I'd love an uncoated 50/3.5 Elmar to go with it eventually. But in the meantime, I'm really happy with this lens.

William

Funny- I have a Coated 5cm F3.5 Elmar made the same year as that Summitar!

Also a coated 9cm f4 Elmar, made very close to it...

The uncoated Elmar that came with a Leica III has mechanical damage to the heical, and wobbes so much the focus cannot be trusted. This reminds me to make it into S-Mount using a Contax fixture.

I imagine you would have a coated one :) and in most ways coated lenses are vastly superior - there may be single coated modern lenses but no uncoated ones! Still for me, there is something I find pleasant about the results in the right light with Reala (maybe the new Ektar too :D ). But a 50/3.5 is a someday lens. I'll add a 90 to the two I've got for now and maybe add somthing else next year. Maybe I'll find a J8 shell and an uncoated 50/2 Sonnar for that jonesing... ;)

William

Yep, good representation of why I'd like to have an uncoated Sonnar on a Leica.

Thank you for all you share here, Brian.

Nice Summitar shots, William! I especially like the fourth one -- the muted colors are lovely. Brian -- Thanks for the background info on this lens. I picked up a 1949 Summitar earlier this year... so far I've used it mainly for landscapes ...
