The Maligned Voigtlander Prominent (The Sporty Corvair?)

IIRC, the push-on filters & hood are supposed to engage w/the knurled ridge towards the front of the lens. You can bend the metal tabs on the inside of the filter/hood inward to make them tighter.

I wonder if part of the hood is missing, then, because there are no metal tabs, and it doesn't in any way engage with anything, just slips on and off.

Anyway, I found this in my search:

I had one a few years ago and while I adored the build quality and German style I could never really get past the poor ergonomics. Also I found that the lenses (I had the 35mm, the 50mm f2 and the 100mm) were quite low contrast, in my experience at least. I sold it with regrets, as I often do when I sell a really nice camera that I am just not using enough to justify keeping and often have thought of buying another although if I did I really suppose I would not use it enough again. Cest la vie.

You can see what the proper hood looks like in lower left of the photo in this eBay ad (no relation to seller, just for illustrative purposes, etc.):

You can see the tabs I referred to.

Nice writeup. I've been very vocal in the past for my disdain for the Prominent. Lots of promise. On paper, everything looks great. In practice, yikes.

I won't repeat what has been said.

Voigtlander used the "focus by dial" approach on several cameras. The problem with it on the Prominent is the camera's weight. There's too much camera to try to twist that knob while also attempting to hold the camera. Rangefinders aren't the best tool for moving objects, and with the Prominent, it's downright impossible.

The Vito III (essentially a fixed-lens folding version of the Prominent) is a much better camera to use, and because it's lighter in weight, you aren't fighting the camera as much.

The eyepiece on the Prominent is too far to the right, and you end up poking yourself in the eye with the knuckle of your thumb, because the camera is so damn heavy that you have to grip it tightly.

Plus, it's ridiculous that you should have to pre-tension a shutter on what is supposed to be an auto-tensioning camera.

I see that this is turning into a rant.

The nice thing is that the Ultron is a very sweet lens. A lovely lens. I've not had a problem with flare, but it's only seen limited use.

A few years ago, I picked up an adapter that allows me to use this lens on a Zeiss Ikon Contax. All the benefits of the Ultron and none of the aggravation of the Prominent.

That lens hood

That lens hood

The lens hood used to fall off for me until I found out how to put it on properly. There's a ring at the mounting end that you twist after you've put the hood on the lens. It tightens on that knurled ring on the lens. You hold the hood in position as you twist the ring. This is another of the Prominent's quirks.
