These new digital cameras are complex

I actually found my F6 harder to follow menu wise than my D700. There's a lot less options of course but it seemed harder to navigate!

I read the manual and decide which functions are useful for me, and educate myself on its tendencies. Just set it and forget it. Good thing my camera has custom menus so I can quickly access the most changed functions I use once in a while, but all in all, how I operate my digital camera doesn't differ much from film.

I don't think its just a digital thing its modern camera Eos 1v is more difficult than a 1D as no lcd screen so its all just numbers for custom settings.

The Merrill's got to be the simplest though unless we talk cameras of te 70/80s. 😀

Well... the merrill doesn't have dedicated aperture/shutter speed dials really, so you need to look at the lcd to discern what your settings are. Maybe the menu is very simple, but as far as physical interface, the fuji X cameras are simple as leica M's.

Having spent the money I want to avail myself of the features. It is for the ability to change ISO, have different film effects (I want to avoid post-processing where I can), metering and focussing methods as well as viewfinder display and playback information that I have bought the camera.

It's not intended to be a replacement for my mechanical film cameras - I see them as providing quite different capabilities and I'm not looking to replicate the functionality of the film cameras in the digital ones.

What I'm not yet fluent in is the operation and selection of the different variables.

A reference book is a good idea - I don't want one that replicates the manual though, I'm looking for more added value on the use of setting than that.

Any suggestions for the X100s? (I've seen the one for the XPro-1 mentioned which looks just the thing - how comparable are the menu settings?)

Instantly to learn. Turn it to manual and it works like a Leica. Pick up the rest as you go along.

Photoshop is more difficult than a camera, lot more difficult if you want perfection.

In my experience, when people complain about the complexity of a camera, it's just them refusing to learn how to use it. If you don't want to, or know how to use the features of the camera you bought, why did you buy it?

I prefer simplicity.
Simplicity can be perfection.
Complex menus, huge instructions simply are not for me.
I don't want Raw. I use JPEG. I am happy with less.
My Leica-M system functions without batteries.
I love the basic.
Too many choices, too many needless decisions.
Photography is "seeing".
If one cannot "see" photographs, no amount of features will help.
I tried out a highly recommended camera over the weekend.
The color balance was way off. Not visible on the screen in sunlight!
Reviews "mentioned a "slight blue" bias! Kidding!I seen less blue using Kodachrome for artificial light in sunlight/daylight.
It failed my simplicity test, in every way.
The Apple i-Phone latest accomplishes a whole heap without complexity.

In my experience, when people complain about the complexity of a camera, it's just them refusing to learn how to use it. If you don't want to, or know how to use the features of the camera you bought, why did you buy it?
Because it was the nearest I could GET to what I actually WANTED. Why would I bother to learn to use features I neither need nor want?

Cheers,

R.

i tried out a very well known* and highly advertised "mirrorless"box that simply not for me..
Some super reviews by snake oil salespeople.
i thought of using some of my lenses..
i MUST use Raw, needless useless functions, that pander
to Techno geeks.Even the zoom feature hidden in the menu!
i twiddle a small lever. i feel very happy.🙂
No i did not buy it.
i didn't bother to even look at the images in the included program.Deleted the whole lot incl. the ones, taken on it's own..The miracle of "Touch Screen".
I do use digital but only in P/S digitals, all with viewfinders.
I can make images, both for myself and assignments.
i still use my SIMPLE Film cameras.
