Actually, I think the OP may have access to some Nikon lenses, so might as well stay within the Nikon system.

This is true, I do have access to nikon lenses, plus NIkon is what I know. Have had f3hp, fm2,etc. This is my first AF body to shoot with.

And Nikon does rule!!

Just another vote for a F100, which makes sense if you already have Nikon DSLRs around the household.

I just bought and tried a good old F3 w a nice 50/1.4 like the good old days (Had a Domke bag full of that stuff). Not only was it heavier than a brick, but I found that my eyes are not what they are used to be. Rather than mess around with diopters and squinting and having it not be as nice as the experience I remember from the 80s-90s, I am selling it and getting a F100 to use with my AF DSLR lenses.

We had a Fe around but it felt flimsy compared to the F3. Although the weight was easier, fo sho.

If you want to be really pure, the camera to get is a Leicaflex SL with a 50mm Summicron-R. Even heavier than an F3!

Funny how these old pro SLRs are such incredible bargains while Leica Ms have held their own....

My how things change! Fifty responsses to this thread, and not a single one suggesting that a rangefinder is the only camera to use for street. What's happening here? 🙂

I personally think an SLR is a far more versatile device for taking photographs than a rangefinder and I can't really be convinced otherwise. I can lock onto a subject and focus manually accurately and more consistently with an SLR nearly every time. It doesn't make my rangefinders any less important for what I value them for though! 🙂

Keith - I can't argue with that! And while I expect that an overhauled M4 should have one of the brightest viewfinders available, my Pentax LX is even brighter with any moderately fast lens fitted. For low light work that has become my camera of choice, by necessity. That or auto-focus.

I got a Nikon 8008s graciously donated to me by a fellow member at RFF and Im doing a local pickup up an AF 35mm-70mm lens that I won on ebay for $50.

I'm thinking of switching to the D300. Anyone have an experience with it?

It's a GREAT camera, but it's noticeably hefty, especially if you're coming from RF. I actually switched to D90 for similar imaging performance in a lighter package (and the video is fun to toy around with)

I dont think this was suggested yet. Well, someone suggested Canon. Great cameras and I used and still use them. AF if better than many. Even with older models. But what else is availble from Canon are - EOS RT and EOS 1NRS. With no moving mirror and therefore VF blackout - it's the closest to RF you can get in SLR world. I have RT and 630 - which I think both are superb cameras - and I tried most of them in my day - ELAN, ELAN II, A2E, EOS3, 1, 1n, etc and as far as film goes - these two I keep coming back to - 630 and RT. I think worth looking into.

Just interested in more info on the 630 & RT. Why do you prefer them to say the Elan IIe. I like the look of the 630 & RT cameras. The 630 seems to be readily available and super cheap. Everyone seems to lament the slow AF though. How did you find it. Interested on your view on this before I buy one. Good Rangefinders are too expensive so I'm going to give SLR a go. Seems liek great value.Thanks.

N90s is an awsome camera. Very inexpensive right now. Very fast autofocus and awsome metering.

Very compatible with all Nikon mount lens.
