To filter or not filter?

I have twenty filters or so, brands from unnamed to the B+W and Hoya standards. From casual inspection I don't see much problem with the glass. Like at the opticians, the added value is mainly in the coatings. I preferred the ones with a visible multi coating that subdued the reflections, just like how I do with prescription glasses. However it can be difficult to find feedback on which filters smear and which are easy to clean.
Re hoods, if I am not shooting into light sources I often neglect them, because it adds an intimidating length for some sensitive souls.
