To filter or not filter?

I have twenty filters or so, brands from unnamed to the B+W and Hoya standards. From casual inspection I don't see much problem with the glass. Like at the opticians, the added value is mainly in the coatings. I preferred the ones with a visible multi coating that subdued the reflections, just like how I do with prescription glasses. However it can be difficult to find feedback on which filters smear and which are easy to clean.
Re hoods, if I am not shooting into light sources I often neglect them, because it adds an intimidating length for some sensitive souls.

You might as well say, "If you never go anywhere or do anything, but just fondle your lenses at home, you don't need filters." Both statements are equally patronizing and pointless.
