To M6 or not to M6?

From what I've heard, I'd suggest at least trying the ZI.

Surely a bright viewfinder is the single most important aspect of a camera? At least, it is for me. If I can't see what I want to take a picture of, and cann't focus on it quickly - what's the point?

I say "from what I've heard" because I'm scared to try the ZI...

So, try the user M6 classic and the ZI and then get the M6 because it *feeels so gooood*

I think an LHSA M6 would be a great shooter. It depends if you are the type of person that likes to break in their own camera. You would be paying about $500 in my addition for that right. I like to take care of my stuff even if it is in user condition. I haven't seen many M6s for $800. I see a lot of M3s and M2s for that price. Mostly the M6s that I've seen have been between $1000-$1100 with a couple extra hundred for good condition. The only functional difference that I can see with the M6 LHSA is the reduced number of frame lines. Are you someone who loves 28mm?

The LHSA is still a possibility - it's boxed, near mint - the seller says maybe 18 rolls have gone through it. It's also local, so no ebay worries or paypal & shipping costs. One thing I'm not sure about is the finder (0.85) - I don't see myself getting anything wider than 35mm at the moment, so maybe that's fine. Is it worth ~$400- for an easier transaction and minty condition? And I thought I had zeroed in on a clear choice...

The ZI's viewfinder is indeed nice. I've played with it briefly at a camera shop and it's outline felt cumbersome to me compared to my M6

I just upgraded from a Voigtlander R to an M3, and I can't tell you how happy I am I did so. Found a good looking single stroke version on PopFlash, very clean indeed and I love that view finder...! That money I saved, with going for the M3 instead of an M6, went towards a lovely new 50 ZM Planar lens....loving it!

Viewing the framelines of the .85 and the 35mm Sumilux were a PITA!

Otherwise a fantastic camera. I think you start to cut hairs when discussing any M body. Afterall they are only lightboxes.

I'm going to check out the LHSA in a few hours - I could have a new
(to me) M6 by lunch time! I realise that I could save some cash by
getting a regular M6, but I also think I could turn this one around and
sell it for easily what the seller wants for it should I not like it. I was
going to print out the "USED Leica M Buyer's Check List" from
Camerquest and do all the checks. I thought I might bring
along my DSLR just to check the meter readings. Anything else?

Now all I need is a LTM to M adapter - anyone got one for a 50mm they
are not using?

meeker

$1800 - that's nice - I did not realise that they did the LHSA model in Black

I suppose the case is worth $200 - so that puts the cam @ $1,600

There is a user M6 in the Classifieds - which presumably you have seen

Good Luck

I saw that one - factor in the shipping & paypal and I'm paying an
extra $400. If the LHSA is a mint as it appears to be, I think it's
probably worth it.

I knew it would be dangerous to go see that LHSA - still it's
everything I expected it to be, and eventually my bank balance
will recover.

meeker (new m6 owner 🙂 )

Now I really need to get an adapter!
