Thanks, Bob. I took a look at Orvis' website and the vest - S181PK - and it seems like it might work fine out here in the desert during summer. In winter I can just layer underneath it (looks like Tom is doing that in the original photo). Anyway, it doesn't get that cold down here, although if you get out too early in the morning you can run into 28F, but it'll warm up quickly.

S181PK is all sold out. Drat!!

I think that we are in a new age of "sold out". Like the economic times of the 50's, or the shortages of Russia. no longer will factories push out products only to have to discount them to sell. Factories will produce on economic production quantities and stores will cut back on stock. If demand increases they will not set up new factories to produce, they will merely just increase the MSRP. IMHO of course

I have the Orvis SI81PK purchased about two years ago. I wear it almost daily (I live in Hawaii). I like it because it doesn't have those puffed-out pockets like fly-fishing vest. It lays closer to the body and isn't too long (or short). Mine does not have any leather reinforcements.

I emailed Orvis yesterday (April 22, 2009) and got the following reply. There still may be hope if you seek one. I was inquiring specifically for med. and large sizes, so I don't know if they might have S or XL.

Now all I need are those dark blue or black long-sleeves and I'll be as dapper as Tom!

I'm not Tom; I don't wear his vest; I agree with him that Orvis stuff lasts longer and is a great bargain on a cost per wear basis, especially if they are bought during Orvis' periodic sales.

I do wear a vest with many pockets (sorry no paparazzi around to take my picture with it) -- many pockets in it -- pockets in front, top and bottom, pockets in back, pockets on pockets, pockets outside, pockets inside, open pockets, velcroed pockets, and zippered pockets. I use it as a man purse for travel AND for photography.

This one is a Titanium (name, not material), made by Columbia Sportswear Company, comes in three colors -- available online and I think North Face also carries one color.

Google it and you should be able to see the colors and who carries it in brick and mortar stores, as well as different online purveyors. I think I paid $69.

you will see Tom A "WITHOUT VEST". I almost didn't recognize him, as I think the vest is usually part of every wardrobe change. LOL

and YES, Tom, that was your Nikon F. Actually I still have a couple of "F's" around along with some non AI lenses.

You're right about the Digital thing. I have thousands of images archived on DVD and numerous external drives, but the negatives are neatly stacked in binders which I can pull out anytime. It's like going back in time.
