too hot! damn!!

The camera was on and operating and autofocusing continually in the bag. So, yes, the OP was "using it" as far as the camera is concerned.

But a film camera would not have overheated as it would have stopped at the end of the film.

So again:

Film cameras 1 0 Digital cameras.

lol.

I so love winding up 'diggies'.😀 Almost as much fun as winding up 'Barnackites'.

But not quite as dangerous. 😛

If it was accidentally working in the bag, it could be hotter then previous X-Series cameras. The in-camera CPU is significantly more powerful and therefore generates more heat.

Digital cameras use heat-sink technologies to reduce operating temperatures. They essentially transfer heat from the electronics to the air. Inside a bag, once the air heats up the electronics can't become cooler.

I think your camera is fine.

More on this... Camera in bag, left on, gets hot. Way too hot.

Note the stories last few days about FAA and lithium batteries on aircraft.

Gist of the articles: If they get hot, lithium batteries can go into "thermal run-away," get hot enough to burn/explode.

I wonder if we have to fear: Camera in bag, left on, get's hot, triggers thermal run-away in the battery, and burns?

Here's a demo. It's a laptop, they use an aux heater to raise the temp to 250°C, then the fun begins.

kinda scary...

250 C is above 480 F.

If the camera reached 250 C the bag would likely be on fire or melt before the battery went off.

Still, a runaway Li battery is profoundly destructive.

charging my new battery in my just swapped out xe3. the only downside is they only had a silver body and i so much prefer a black body.
but the real test is to see if this one heats up or not.
i’ll keep those interested up to date...
