I have a complaint! 😱

I think the rule of allowing people to post many photos at once really turns away people who are more serious about individual pieces.

The last few times I posted an image I noticd this. There are 9 slots to display shots in the gallery section, and in under a half hour my shots were nowhere to be seen. I have seen this happen a lot more recently; when I first started posting at RFF I got actual comments on images. Now there is no chance for anybody to see them unless they go digging. And who has time to go digging through all these almost identical snapshots that keep flooding the gallery?

I think this is a problem of multiple posting. Right now, for example, the 9 slots are filled with snapshots from one person.

I just think we should be limited to one shot per day at most. That might encourage people to post quality rather than quantity. I don't mean to sound elist but the situation has become ridiculous, I have seen people fill the slots with vitrually identical shots, as if they are trying to show us how to bracket exposure or something!

</rant> 🙄

As this is OT I moved it to the Feedback forum for Jorge to view.

We have had a number of discussions in the past regarding the value of limited uploads per day. At this point though, Sponsor Members are allowed a greater number of uploads per day as part of the added value and thank you for your donation to the site.

I see your point. Although whether an image is considered a "snapshot" or not is subjective, I have had the same feeling. I think this could be why some posters on other forums sometimes belittle the quality of images here; they have probably logged in at the wrong time and maybe missed some quality work because the gallery was plagued with snapshots.
BTW I'm not saying what's in the gallery right now is poor by any means!
I've also stopped posting in the rate my photo section of the gallery because NO ONE EVER RATES MY PHOTOS!!!

I agree .. and a limited number of uploads per day (also for paying members) would also help if the gallery is meant for sharing pictures and giving/receiving comments.
Now the gallery often works just as a portal to upload to free webspace (or not so free if a paying member). THat conflicts with the sharing/ commenting idea of the gallery that some people really enjoy.

There are images I want to upload to my gallery for various reasons, but imo are not really interesting for the general community. I would like a button: "do not display in upload area"

Keith, you're onto something. I moderate a couple of forums over at Flickr.. max upload for one is 3 a day, another one a day, and one is one per week!

It makes people think about the shots they wish to upload. Sometimes I think people are posting shots for 'family and friends' to view on line. That's permitted however there might be a way for the admins to separate out the idea of shots for comment but not critique.. anyone?

Itsa question of etiquette - we all know what we're allowed to do, even if we have paid, but we still shouldn't swamp the board in one go. I paid up because I believe in the value of RFF as a forum, not as an online photo album.

A possible compromise/solution might be to allow one upload a day to the members photos section (which gets displayed) but allow more uploads to other sections (which are not displayed).

I think this highlights a genuine problem. In many cases multiple postings prove that "more is less", overwhelming the merits of the individual photographs of which they consist. We could at least have a self-denying ordinance that, whilst members could post whatever number of pictures in 24 hours, they should perhaps post no more than 3 at any one time.

Cheers, Ian

I like this suggestion.

I also often don't upload shots to the gallery. Instead I will create a sometimes coherent photo essay and post the images in a thread in the forum.

Under the solution I proposed you could then post one pic from the essay to members with a pointer to the gallery where the full series is posted.

I haven't been here long, but I browse the gallery a lot, there's some good stuff. I agree that it's difficult to keep up with the new stuff. I don't pay anything, I'm happy to be limited to one upload a day, makes a lot of sense. Maybe if us freeloaders were limited to one or two a day and sponsors were left with their current allowance, that would help keep the thing more manageable.

I completely disagree with the one-a-day/photo essay proposal. The inevitable result would be to finally reduce the gallery audience to a knot of dedicated browsers and eliminate the serendipitous discovery of photographs. All that's required is intelligence and restraint on the part of users, with the clear understanding that the gallery is not a dumping ground for happy snaps, but a showcase in which every image is intended to invite critical comment and discussion.

All the best, Ian

I've gotta agree with imposing a limit of uploads per day. There are plenty of places to have your photos displayed online. Surely no one needs to upload more than a couple photos to the RFF gallery in any one day?

Yes, it's convenient to upload a set at one time but on balance I think it's better to have more time between uploads (or better editing!).

Separation is the key ... i can only agree.
Of course people may have several reasons to upload. And that can stay as is this way. Paying members also have their unlimited webspace this way
This could alse give the "pictures of the week" threads a new impulse.
It's hard to keep in touch with and select your pics of the week if you have to look through 75 pages ......

I am really glad this topic is brought up .. the gallery is vital part of this forum for me!

Ian .... that's exactly what and how it should be.
Unfortunately this will not work without stronger regulation on the number of uploads per day ..... or separation in another way ......i am afraid .
I have been on alot of phoforums the last years .. and it never worked without .... wished it was different myself.

There is curently a limit of twenty images per day for paying members. If I had known that I should not upload as many images I would never have done so. I will gladly give Jorge permission to remove all of my images from the gallery.

I don't mind it if the limit is set to one image per day.
