Here are a few thoughts I have about this topic:
1. This forum (RFF) is a very real work of art in it's own right (I think Duchamp would agree). In this cyberspace we have: old, new, classic, modern, abstract, spontaneous, thought out... many types of photo art. There is also continuing dialogue about all types of rangefinders and our collective interests (some good nonsense too). In this way, I see this forum as being a collective artwork, and I think it will be viewed though this lense in the future. Therefor all who contribute shape that work to a degree.
2. Now this is what I think about the term artist. I think it is appropriate for anyone to say that they are an artist. If I either like or dislike your work, then I would be inclined to agree with you. Now the funny thing for me in regards to photography, is I love to look at and take snapshots, which most people would consider poor photography (this is why I like the Baldessari thought). If you have taken one shot that everyone else agrees is great, then you are an artist (the same as one hit wonders are still musicians -Randy Newman has only ever had one hit, same for the Grateful Dead).
A great thing about computers is that we can potentially save bodies of art longer than ever before. This might end up being useful as public perception of art is ever changing.
