Upcoming Short Trip to China:

Raid, on my last trip to Beijing I only brought my CL + 40/2. It suited me well. The only thing on my mind was "what if the CL breaks down?". A spare camera is always useful. Your wife's Oly will do. 🙂

What a coincidence; I dug up my CL + 40mm/2 lens today and I completed a roll of film half an hour ago. Looking through its veiwfinder reminded me how much clearer it is than with a Canon rangefinder like the IVsb or the Bessa T with its tiny focusing help device. I may take the CL in place of the Canon P.

I've had two trips to Mainland China only so far. First time to the big old cities, second time to the natural wonder of Jiu Zhaigou Valley, south west. I agree with Michiel that in June it gets really hot. Since you'll visit some town near Beijing, it's probably no exception. I wouldn't want to walk in those big squares/plazas in the boiling heat. Not that great light anyway.

I think you're quite right to bring only the very necessary kit. Wide & fast lens is perticularly useful, as you can shoot people close--you have the "privilege" as a tourist 😉 . No need to have many lenses as it's more about seeing & timing. My own experience tells me it's not helping to carry & change lenses during a walking journey. Actually, your initial kit(2 bodies 3 lenses + 1 p&s) is already superb and that's about as much as I would bear for even a photographic trip.

As for B/W or colour, it is purely sujective choice. Many cool travel pics are in colour, aren't they? Just have fun with whatever you shoot! 😎

My girlfriend took my Olympus XA4 to China. That's all you need.

Think seriously light, and wide angle.

If she was going again I'd advise her to pick up a Fuji Natura at duty free in Bahrain or Hong Kong.

I am happily married, so a digital Leica is out! I will stick to my original set-up, and I hope to be able to bring back many excellent photos. No need for digital equipment.

I used the XA for part of my photography last summer in Nagoya (Japan). It has its limits, and I would not be feeling "safe" with just this camera. I want the old look in this trip, and I may favor older designs,, such the Elmar over the Elmarit and using a collapsible Summicron over a Nikkor 5cm lens. In fact, I may use a Canon 35mm/2.8 over a Canon 35mm/1.8 to capture a different signature of a look. Call me sentimental, but I like the old look. The XA does not a true old look to its images.

If you want really really OLD looks, buy "Lucky SHD400" film in China. This bloody film lacks modern anti-flare (glare?) layer and any highlight will just diffuse into a ball of light, yet retaining fine details.

These were shot in Hang Zhou with Zeiss ZM 25/2.8

I guess it's been asked before but... is there a place in the US or Europe where I could get hold of some Lucky SHD400? Seems like an interesting film with that lack of halation layer. Might push back into the B&W film fold. 🙂

eBay. A search for 'Lucky 35mm' will get you started.

Indeed. Lazy me.
Just bought 10 rolls of Lucky SHD400 for $16 + $7 p&p. $23 for 10 rolls. Not bad. That's about 1,85 euro per roll.

Anyone tried to dev this film in Rodinal?

7 RMB/roll local in Shanghai, and I didn't bargain for the price, yet. The suggested developer is either Lucky or D76.

The China I want to see is the countryside shown in the movies House of Flying Daggers and Hero. That would put your velvia to good use.

those were filmed in between chongqing and chendu, look for sichuan province in china and a place called jiu zhai go

come here and buy lucky film, at 60 cents a roll you will think you are getting ripped off over there

It takes me good deal more to fly over to China than to spend a few euro on 10 rolls of film.

But perhaps you can set up a little Lucky film retail shop for RFF members...? 😀

Thanks for this tip. Now I can take along fewer rolls of film and buy some in China.

If my lugagge doesn't get too heavy, I will load up on Cinese B&W film on the way back here.

if you want the era stuff, its harder to find because the company stopped making it. If you look for that stuff, and I suggest you do over the lucky (if you prefer ilford like tones to kodak tmax) then you might actually have to order it
