Leica LTM UV filter question

I have a Leitz Wetzlar UV filter with a definite greenish cast...

Does anyone know how it might have happened?

Or what affect it might have on performance?

Since Summitar filters are difficult to find, maybe somebody replaced the glass ?
I didi it several times on E39 filters.

I thought of that, too...but there's no retainer ring to remove the filter...How could I take it out and replace it?

I have exactly the same Summitar filter and it is as greenish as yours. Maybe they didn't care about a slight cast as most people used b&w film back then? Or some special kind of glass which developed the cast with age?

Bob, I think they are glued (having a bunch of Summitar filters and they all look the same, no ring)

After Googling around, I understand that an insect repellant called Deet, made by Ben's and Muskol, can dissolve the glue around the filter and, then, it can be replaced...I may try that if nothing else works...

I've read that the Summitar glass was glued in. I didn't find it that way. I believe they are swedged in with a rotating wheel swedge (think can opener in reverse).

However, there is a screw in mount version. I think about 10% of the total production made were the screw in retaining ring variety. It's best to find the screw in ring type rather than mess with the swedged models. They aren't that rare, I've found 3 just shopping on eBay.

If you must (this worked for me), lay the filter face down on a table, take a common snap fit PVC 35mm film container with the open end facing the rear of the filter and give it a good pop with a mallet. The glass pops right out. It won't break.

Any 39 mm glass will fit in and can be easily glued in with silicon. Silicon is easy to clean up.

As far as the color goes, it's aging; mine are bright yellow, not green!

My Summitar UV filter also has this greenish hue to the glass. I use it with Fuji 800 print film all the time and don't see any greenish hue imparted to the prints. I'd say use as is and don't worry about it. BTW, this filter is from Leitz Wetzlar. Another I have from Leitz New York is completely clear.
