V700 and chromes issues

Hi All,
Just noticed afunky issue with my v700. Thsi only happens with chromes!

I develop a roll of e6. Put it on the light table, a real one with standard calibration, slides either look well exposed or not but all look the same brightness as the light source is the same.

I scan into LR3 using the v700. The preview image is a bit darker but I expect that. Once i scan with the auto color setting at its lowest point I get a beautiful scan but it is between 1/3 and 1/2 step too dark.

My monitor is calibrated with Spyder 3 and I have the version that adjusts for ambient light so I believe my monitor is accurate. The scan is darker than needed.

This is a pretty easy fix in LR3 provided the original exposure is good but when the exposure is off that 1/2 stop gets tricky to adj 🙂

I wll play with the auto color setting on the V700 a bit but any other ideas? I dont see this with B+W or clr neg but I am sure it is there as well.

Does this happen with both EpsonScan and Silverfast (and Vuescan if you have that too)? I just wondered if this might help you determine if it is a software issue with a specific program.

If you have the software for it, have you tried profiling your scanner for that chrome type?

Hey Doug..... Guess what holders i am using 🙂

I tried it with vuescan as well. I can "make" them a bit brighter using exposure controls in both epson and vuescan but native output of the scanner seems just a slight bit dim.

IIRC vuescan does not profile for chromes...is that correct?

It has been a while since I have used it but I do believe it allows for use with the IT8 profile targets like you get from Wolf Faust.

I always adjust the histogram triangles with B&W, but how do you do this with color?

I have not but have in the past. I guess I am comparing this to my normal workflow where I set the epson to the min amount of auto color adj. It works great for clr neg. I will fool wih it some but I still dont see why the overall scan would be darker.

I am heading home for lunch so I will mess with it some then.

So.....I tried scanning with the auto color at zero, mid and full. Zero gave me the best saturation while full was the lightest. The full seting came close to the light table in luminosity but the colores were off.

I set the histogram and was able to get very close to the light table with the auto color corection set at the midpoint.

I can fix the issue but I m concerned that there is an issue.

You might be referring to auto exposure? If so, it actually controls the 'tone curve'. Low is linear, the others add different contrast curves. You can check this in the little curve button under adjustments in the main control palette. Hope this helps.

I did mean auto exposure but did not know it was a tonal tool. Makes sense based ont he result I got!

I ill try vuescan tonight and see if it is any better. One hting i like about chomes isvery little PP hassle...until now!~
