Vacation: Which camera & lens will/did you take

Hah, I wish I had the confidence to do that with the Autocord. I just know I'll be wishing for wide angle and automation at different times if I follow my normal shooting patterns.

Last trip, to Italy, 2.5 wks -- took:
Xpan, w. 45mm only,
RD-1, w. 28, 50 only
S90

Learned: too much gear and wrong set of lenses, never used the 50.

Upcoming trip: East Coast and Italy, 'bout a month.
Taking:
Xpan w. 45mm only, because I want to "make this camera mine"
S90

Though I'm afeard i'll miss the RD1, which would be accompanied by the 28 and the 15 if it were going. And boy, is getting Xpan developed and scanned a pain. Gotta get myself set up to do some myself.

I've usually gone with an R4M or M2, and 21/35/50 lenses. Last year, tho, on a two-week UK visit, I had almost too much film to fit in my only piece of luggage. Next month, I'll be there for 18 days, mostly in Scotland. So, I'm taking a Nikon D5100 and three lenses: a 10-24 wide, a 35, and a 70-200. The camera is small. Two of the lenses are big.

I'm tempted to also take the M2 and one lense. But, I'll resist.

For a week in Denmark I wanted to travel really light and only took my Lumix LX-5, a Contax T for B&W and an Olympus XA as backup with me. I ended up taking only 10 pictures with the Contax T and the rest was digital (nearly 500 shots). Next time I will probably leave the digicam at home and try to get less but better pictures on film.

I second that. Last year I took the Ikon and 21/35/75, this year I brought only the 28/50 and didn't regret it. Less is more.

(However, I cheated for the color pix and brought the Nex along 😀)

When I spent 6 weeks in China all I took was a 5D Mark II and a 35mm f/1.4 lens. It was perfect. The lack of gear was inspiring.

Next time I go somewhere Im going to really limit myself with a film camera. Most likely a Mamiya 7 and 65mm.

Having one camera on a trip is risky but when I really think about it, if it fails; no big deal- just forget about it and enjoy the vacation.

I'm just about to enter this round of negotiations with myself for our week away. If things go to form, I will end up taking five cameras and as many lenses.....and use only two 😱

M3 with 21 SA, 50 cron and 135 T-E. Shot Provia 400X.

Must say, I'm liking colour less and less (though 400X is great stuff). Although the weather may have played a role (overcast days aren't great for slides), I'll probably bring B&W next time.

In 2011, I have made longer trips with:

Leica M8 + Epson R-D1 + 4 lenses

or

Leica M8 + Bessa R2M + 3 lenses

or

Leica M8 + 1 lens

(Actually, one trip it was M8 + 2 lenses, but I only used one.)

Joerg I generally take two Ms and three lenses; depending on circumstances a 35, 50 & 90 or a 24,35 & 75. B&W film is 400ISO in the winter and 100 in the summer. Last trip was a couple weeks in Ireland to see friends and family and I took just one camera and lens; my Fuji S5 and 17-55/2.8 zoom. It worked out OK... 🙂

I usually just take my M6 and 35mm Summicron in a little bum (fanny) bag - light, convenient and secure. I can also fit in the bag an orange filter and two rolls of film. Of course I do take more rolls of film Tri-X and Rollie Retro! I do have other lenses but I do take them 95% of the time use the 35mm anyway.

Paris in a week and half; day trips to Normandy beaches, Chartres, and Versailles, as well as lots of walking around the Left Bank. I'm taking my Contax G2 with 45/2 and a whole bunch of BW film. I haven't finally decided on my manual focus/D700 line up yet.

This was my holiday camera the last years. Voigtländer Vitomatic IIIb. Cheap, but supercool and bulletproof camera.
There are some filters and a hood in the leather case. Seaside in northern Germany:



This year, I took my Leica M3 with rigid Summicron with me:



Can't say, which one I loved more. Both are great, the Voigtländer has the big advantage, that it is cheaply replaced, if you let it fall in the sand, water, whatever.
The Leica....hmmm...

For our most recent vacation (April 2011), I took my Canon S95 for color shots and my Minolta XD11 (and Rokkor 58 f1.4 and 28 f2.8) loaded with BW400CN for B&W shots. Last year, I took only my Yashica Electro 35 GSN and a handful of rolls of color film. I don't like hauling a ton of gear on vacation!

Lately I'm into taking a 50 and a 28 and a Leica M6; that's what I used in Italy in May. Upcoming trip East will likely be the same: M6 or MP with Canon 50mm f1.8 and C/V 28mm f3.5 OR Leica M2 with 35 Summicron and Zeiss 21f4.5 Biogon. The Bessa T may be the ultimate small travel camera when combined with the C/V 28mm f3.5 lens; that's a tough one to leave home.

I could never imagine being able to actually utilize that much gear on vacation. I would despise traveling with so much. will you actually use all of that? I mean maybe I’m just not a gear nut or something by why in the world would you honestly need to carry two 35s and two 50s? 4 lenses for two focal lengths? I just can’t imagine. I use less equipment when I’m doing a journalism assignment! god forbid I try and enjoy a vacation while hauling around so much gear!
