Vacation: Which camera & lens will/did you take

For Vegas a few weeks back I brought my Contax T3 with Ektachrome and my Pany GF1 with the 20mm. Shot the Pany almost exclusively, one roll through the T3.

If traveling to a city: Ricoh GR1v or Fuji Natura loaded with Portra 400 or Ektar 100.
If traveling anywhere else: GW690iii and Portra 400.

Going to Maine in October.
I think I'm just bringing the X100 and a fly rod.
But I may break down and bring one of my Nikons. Maybe.

I had with me a very small camera bag that barely held a Leica M6 with the 35mm/1,4 Summilux (very small), plus the light Bessa T with a CV 25/4(also tiny). The Heliar 50/3.5 was tucked away in the bag. I did not have to change lenses, and the 25+35 combo worked out very well for me.

I could never imagine being able to actually utilize that much gear on vacation. I would despise traveling with so much. will you actually use all of that? I mean maybe I’m just not a gear nut or something by why in the world would you honestly need to carry two 35s and two 50s? 4 lenses for two focal lengths? I just can’t imagine. I use less equipment when I’m doing a journalism assignment! god forbid I try and enjoy a vacation while hauling around so much gear!

Yes I'll use it all. I plan my day with 2 cameras and 3 lenses unless one is the ltm then I'll carry 2 m and 2 screw lenses. It might not make sense for you but it works for me.

Since my Canonet is constantly failing I decided to take my Eos 7d and 4 lenses plus Speedlite and stuff to the french atlantic coast this year. It was a whole lot of fun, but I could have easily gotten away with only the 35 1.4 and the body.

Headed to northern Minnesota to catch the fall color.

Taking the big stuff for panoramics and scenics----Fujica 690/Linhof 617/Noblex 150.

Last trip was a Canon 50D because I had to take lots of shots (climbing) and needed 200mm. But the next two trips will be with Bronica RF645 with 45mm and 100mm, Bessa R4A with ZM 25mm and a Canon D10 underwater digicam. Portra, Ektar and Acros. And this list will probably change 5 times as I ponder taking a Hasselblad instead of the Bessa...

Leaving this afternoon, this is what's in my bag.

Forget that noise. Not for me...

I posted earlier that I had taken a bunch of cameras for two weeks in Colorado this summer. I actually took eight cameras but I had secure lodgings and usually went out with just one of them and a lens or two. Mostly I used a IIIc just back from service and a 50mm Elmar and a Nikkor 35mm f2.5 with Nikon zoom finder. Light, compact and worked well. I could probably travel with just that but I had fun using the other cameras too. I found out that my Leica 1a makes lovely images with Ektar and a good lens hood. Pack light and have fun. Joe

I ended up using a Canon P with 135mm 3.5, Jupiter 3 and CV 21mm for most shooting and an Autocord for a few trips out. I took a few other pieces but they remained in the hotel room.

The Yashica CCN came along as a backup 35mm camera (and auto exposure if I didn't want to deal with manual). I'm glad I had it but never felt the need to take it out. I had a 35mm lens but preferred taking the 21mm and 50mm to give me a greater amount of variety (I could have taken the 35mm instead of both but wanted the speed of the J3 and my 35mm is a f/2.8). I also took a folding medium format camera, thinking the Autocord would be too bulky and that I'd want to carry medium format and the 35mm at once. Didn't really happen.

If I were do do this trip again, I probably would take only the Canon P with 135/50/21 and the Autocord. Of course, that trip I'll end up wanting to shoot in rapidly changing light the whole time and will wish I had something automatic with me.

cameraand leses on vacation

Last one to vietnam MAR APR 2010, nikon 90 zoom, nikon f55d 70/300AF lens Very hazy and the weather humid. Next one I will try the HIMATIC 7S R/F I might do better. jack

Maui - GF1 + 20mm + 14-42 zoom (for the wide end).
NYC - M9 + 35mm.
Philippines - M9 + 35mm & LX5 (for the wide end).
Vancouver - GF1 + 20mm + 14mm pancakes.

Lesson learned? I'll use a 28mm more than I would a 50mm (as I was yearning for a 50mm)... now I wish I didn't sell that 28 Biogon to you, Joe! :)

Just did two weeks in France (about 1800 mile driving trip), and took my M9, four lenses, two batteries, one charger, and about 8 cards. No problems, and it was a perfectly-sized kit.

On previous trips I've carried more and less -- went to Vienna for Christmas a couple of years ago and brought a Hasselblad Super Wide C, as well as my Contaflex TLR kit. That turned out to be too much stuff, and that Contaflex weighed a ton. However, we went to the Caymans last year and I just took my Olympus E-P2 and two lenses, plus a Nikonos III for when we went snorkeling, and that was perfect.

Guess it depends on where you're going and what you're going to be doing, yet I seem to be wanting to carry less and less stuff. Too much of a physical and psychological burden, and can get in the way of actually enjoying the vacation (at least for me!).

Next, maybe the X100 and one M with a 50 Summicron. Last, an M5 with that 50 and the Skopar 25. But in Christchurch in '09 and in the hills above there, an A&A ACAM1100 carrying M6, M2, 25 2.8 Biogon, Summicron 35 and 50 (hardly used that one) and the Elmarit M 90. Very easy to carry up hills all day.

Sounds like the kind of kit I could carry -- did you use the 90 much?
