Vintage Aircraft

Why no Spitfires ?

For anyone living near New York, I strongly recommend the Glen Curtiss Museum. QUOTE]

Here you go - and I agree about the Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport!

This is the same aircraft in front of the Bf109 in the first photo of this thread.

Another very special aircraft: Black-6.

Oh yes, and a tragedy that, after all that work, she was first thoroughly bent and then preserved in aspic.

I took my father to see her flying at Duxford - the last time he'd seen a real Messerschmitt 109 (lots of Buchons in that area in 1968!) was as a boy in 1940. Given what transpired, I'm very glad I did.

Tell me about Black 6 -- looks like a 109F or maybe G-2; JG-77 desert markings?

I love looking at old aircraft -- and that shot of the FW-190A up at the start really got my juices flowing: It appears to be in flying condition! Another nice shot in this strong of what I believe to be a Yak-3; a very underrated aircraft.

Keep 'em coming folks!

The Memphis Belle. Shortly after she arrived at the USAF Museum restoration center.

Years ago I got to meet Captain Morgan, the pilot of the Memphis Belle, at the Asheville airshow. His biography is a good read. After completing their missions they returned home for a war bonds tour. When they were flying over Asheville, Captain Morgans home town, He turned the Belle on knife edge and flew her that way between Ashevilles two tallest buildings. One of the buildings had a war office who got on the phone to the pentagon to complain and got the reply that Captain Morgan could buzz any building he wanted to. Captain Morgan died a few years ago. All of these were taken at the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends in Columbus Ohio.

Loving this thread.

Here is my dad atop his A-26 in Korea.

He flew B-26 in WW2, A-26, C-47, C119, B-50, B-57, and many others...

Went to the Central Texas Air Show yesterday, hopefully will have some decent pics.

P-40, Avenger, C-47, B-25, A-26, several T-6, P-51, MIG 17 and one of only two Zeroes in flying condition.

When he was stationed in Japan my dad had a craftsman/artist create a model of his A-26 out of a block of wood. All the details are hand painted, no decals. This model now sits on a shelf in my living room.

During another life, I used to pump JP-4 into Buffs....

Stationed at NAS Atlanta fuel farm we'd get calls to the Dobbins AFB side to pump JP-5 into C5's. We'd piggyback 3 R-9 5000 gallon refuelers to fuel those birds. I asked the flight capt. one time how much fuel would he need & he stated he was already at 70% but needed 10,000 gallons to reach altitude. Awesome planes. I miss those days.

Imagine as a kid this pulling up at your little local airport, 1935.

Some really great photographs in this thread so far, as well as good info on different places one can go to find these awesome pieces of history.

Here are a few from a slide series on aircraft and technology I am beginning:
