The airplane was more successful than you may have read, but yes, it was a handful to many of the seriously under-trained pilots who flew it. In the proper hands with a good understanding of its under developed technology, and limitations, it was devastatingly effective.
The flying examples you see now days (three) are modern replicas with modern (J-85) engines. Physically the same as the original in most ways, yet still certified as experimental.
There is a single original 262 being restored to fly, owned by by a large collection in Seattle. It will fly with original Jumo 004 turbojets re-manufactured with modern metalurgy...$$$...
