For the size and money this lens is highly capable, however if you want technical perfection in a compact 21 you need the C Biogon (which is what I eventually traded up to).

I rarely use anything wider than 35mm, with 24 being the absolute widest I'd ever shoot and it's very rare I like my shots that wide. In fact, whenever I think of why anyone would want a <21mm I don't understand it. This thread proves me wrong and makes me re-appreciate the wide shots. Great stuff everybody.

Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm f4.0 in S-mount on a Nikon SP. Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Taken the day after it opened in 2006. This is the famous "racetrack" - each car was illuminated with a spot light and the sound of its engine was played - LOUD over the speaker system. The grand final was all cars lit up and a full symphony of engines. Evidently it was bit too loud and later the volume was turned down. TriX and D76 and @ f4.0

Wah-ha-ha-hooow! Fantastic shots!

I too have never shot anything so wide (28mm was my go-to glass on my University-days' Nikon F, currently 35 and 50mm on my RFs), and have never even considered anything so wide. But now I have to re-think my focal length strategies.

Do you use this lens in hyperfocal too? I am wondering how wide the depht of field will be if a stop the lens down to f/11 at least.

Hi Bob, I could not help but notice the aspect ratio of the photo above and those in your web site! it's a 0,80 ratio the same of MF (6x7) and LF while 24x36 has a 0,66 ratio.

So I assume you always crop when printing?

Do you do that to change the viewer perception of the wide angle?

I simply crop all of my images to where they look best. If an image works better as an 8x10 aspect ratio rather than a 2x3, I just crop to that. If it works better uncropped, I leave it that way. A few work out better as squares, so they end up that way. You can even find some 6x6 negs cropped to 8x10 prints which others are square.

Nothing fixed, nothing sophisticated, nothing involved, just cropping photos so that they can look the best they can. I do use custom cut mats for my exhibition prints rather than letting the factory defined sizes drive my decision.
