Vuescan is driving me crazy!

I have always felt his position was very fair considering the price of the program.

Let's put things into perspective, though. $80 is a lot less than the $500 SF is asking but it's still $80. If I pay that much for a software from any other company I expect my e-mails to be answered even if I'm asking stupid questions.

Like I said, I haven't tried to contact Hamrick so I'm not complaining about a personal experience but if what you're saying about him ignoring customers is true than that's not acceptable.

I agree; an $80 for-life license with support is not the norm. An improperly-communicated technical issue can only get improperly-diagnosed. I've had my share of people who cannot describe their issue and get very testy when asked for more information. After a while, one learns to prioritize the queue, and update the FAQ.

Frankly after using Vuescan on multiple computers over the years I think operator error is a definite possibility in this current scenario.

Operator error is always a possibility. In this case it is, however, cerainly not a case of getting a simple setting wrong as I have tried every single setting available and they seem to work well with my Epson scanner.

That being said, I'd rather just not use Vuescan at all if I can use Nikon Scan. It's just not that great a software IMO.

I've used Ed's software for a few years now and the one minor issue after a software update was handled promptly by him.

I'm more than satisfied with Ed's approach. The program is top-notch and very affordable. Yes, it has some issues concerning the user interface, the settings, and how those settings affect the operation of the program. But you can configure Vuescan to do just about anything you want in just about every scanner and you get software maintenance for life. That's invaluable.

Vuescan is a specialty tool in a limited market; it's for people who need, whether to get linear scans or use a no-longer-supported scanner, an alternate solution to the scanner's manufacturer software. I'm glad it's available because the alternatives are not very appealing to me.

I don't expect Ed to answer questions he has already covered more than adequately elsewhere; That's what a user's manual is for and leaves him time to look into problems that have not been addressed yet.

I've found when switching between my Canon FS4000US, HP Scanjet G4050, and Nikon LS-2000 I have to reset Vuescan back to defaults (File> Default Options) before making all other settings. Otherwise VS has done some weird stuff.

Yes, it'll lose track of the options at times and freak out. That's why I reset the options frequently and then use a preset to set them back to whatever my preferences (color neg, B&W, slide, 35mm, 6x6, etc) at the moment are.

Ah to finally be home again! I never thought I could appreciate Nikon Scan so much. I now have a nice 15'' pre uni-body MacBook Pro with Leopard on it running Nikon Scan. It'll be my dedicate scanning machine.

That scan of the bird looked perfect right away. Even more accurate than with SF. Not that I'm gonna scan that crappy image but it's nice to know that it works 😀

I picked up a copy of The VueScan Bible by Sascha Steinhoff and downloaded Vuescan 9 x64. Since I bought the professional edition a couple of years ago, I figured I would give it another chance. The book looks to be a comprehensive guide to getting good results with VueScan.
