Hello..

I bought Vuescan when I got my Epson V700 but never used it, I am super dim with technology and couldn't even get the previews up and used the Epson scan software instead which is easier.

Today I recieved the plustek 8100 for 35mm scanning and I have to learn how to use Vuescan -because i don't want to use silverfast.

Can I use the Vuescan I have or do I need a different version for my new scanner?

IIRC, no. Download the latest version. The new scanner should appear somewhere in VueScan and you should be able to pick it as image source.
On the other hand, if you didn't get along with VueScan on your first encounter, why should it be better now? I do not understand why you dismiss the bundled Silverfast software without trying it? I'm not saying either of them is a better software, but the question of user friendliness seem to be more a matter of personal taste. Some prefer Silverfast (me included), while others prefer VueScan. Maybe you find out that you're a Silverfast guy? 🙂

I may give it a try, I read some where I have to download it anyway, something to do with drivers.

I use Vuescan for a variety of older scanners. If I turn the scanner on before opening Vuescan, the software recognizes the scanner and displays the name without my help. But, as stated above, if your scanner is a newer model you'll need a version of Vuescan recent enough to include it. I think Vuescan is absolutely brilliant even though the interface may be cryptic. I use maybe half of the controls, if that, and I learn new things steadily. It displays different options for different scanners, and has always been able to operate any scanner I've tried.
 
I am going to give it another go, it would be good to get past the problems I had, also I bought it so daft not to try.

I think a lot of the anti-SF sentiment has to do more with their license policy than the actual software. A copy of SF will only support one scanner model, so you have to buy several licenses of the same software if you use several scanner models with SF. Another point of criticism is that the price of the software depends on the price of the scanner. SF version xy for consumer grade scanners is cheaper than SF for the semi-pro or pro scanners. That upsets some people. Then there is the question of upgrades. While VueScan offers lifelong free updates and upgrades to newer versions, in the case of SF you usually have to pay for the upgrades (to new versions, updates within one version are free). The upgrade is usually 50% of the price of the new version. That is a part of the criticism I fail to understand, as it is standard for most types of commercial software, it is rather Ed Hamrick's type of "lifelong licensing" that is the odd man out in this case. It costs money to develop a new version of a software and I think it is fair that a vendor doesn't give it away for free. Isn't it the same when you upgrade from version of Photoshop 9 to version 10 or Windows Vista to Windows 7?
 
I don't really like how Silverfast works, the UI is pretty grotty, and the licensing is the icing on the cake. Silverfast may be great if you get used to it, but at that pricing, I'm not going to try, when Vuescan works great and is very affordable.
 
I used to use SF exclusively. The SF user interface drove be nuts. I switch to Vuescan and haven't looked back.

I use an older redundant MacBook Pro as a dedicated Plustek device. Plustek won't provide drivers for new Macs. Plustek and SF can both piss off. I will burn my negatives before I spend another cent on SF.

I am not trying to persuade you or anyone who is a happy VueScan licensee to pay money to make the switch to SF. My post was a comment on the specific situation of the thread opener, who already owns licenses of both products (Silverfast came bundled with his scanner purchase). So there is no harm or cost in trying it.
 
There is only one thing I don't like about vuescan..I want to do custom multi-cropping when I scan negatives. I don't even know if this can be done. Now I have to select and scan a single negative at a time.
Apart from that it is a major improvement over the HP scanjet software I got...

I used Nikon Scan on my iMac. I found it scanned B&W and color neg better than Vuescan. I know a lot of people think that Vuescan walks on water, but it wasn't my experience.
 
If you bought the standard license over a year ago then downloading the newest version won't be very helpful. You should try the current install (if you still have it) first and see if that just works.

Once you sort it out, I'd be very interested in your take on how one scanner compares to the other. Will you keep the 700 for MF and use the 8100 for 35mm? Interested in knowing why you chose both.

I use both MF and 35mm cameras, I'm very happy with the V700 for 120 negs but 35mm scans are disappointing so thought I'd give the Plustek a go..also when I travel I can take the Plustek which is a very neat size..
I'm looking forward to comparing results.

I'm a very happy VueScan user, but I've verified from Mr. Hamrick that this particular thing is not possible. Other than that, I love it and use it for all my serious scans.

Lack of the custom multi-crops has encouraged me to be more selective of what I do scan. In a roundabout way, that is a good thing. :angel:
