I'll try to keep this brief because my interest here is not in the photographic characteristics - which are excellent - but in the content. I suspect these are in reply to my query about a similar wall photograph posted earlier. It looks like these are revetment walls for terraces, but I have never seen this type of construction before (historical or archaeological examples). The shot posted before was different in that the vertical space was filled with small vertically-oriented stones, not small trees or posts, which defies most ideas about how stone walls are built, purposes and stages in the process. Were these associated with vineyards?![]()

Although this is a land of vineyards, I believe that in this particular area where these walls are located there never were any. I believe that this wall was erected as an addition to an older enclosure, delimited by trees of which now only the dead trunks remain.

Thank you for the extra information. These kinds of variations in how people use the land and the methods involved can contribute a lot to how "places" look. I did a search and did not see a "Stone Walls" W/NW thread, but I suspect there are numerous RFF member images that could fill one. I know I have many, but most have not been scanned yet.
