Yep, that's it. My usual lunch stop in a 30-mile bike ride I do frequently in the warmer months is the park just behind me in that shot. I was carrying my new little Tenax I to shoot a test roll after overhauling it, and the gates went down as I was headed back up the hill, so out it came.

Another of the annual UP Home Plate Special as it passed by just north of here the other day. (Notice how bright and shiny it is!) 🙂
Sadly, this was delayed because when it was on display by the ballpark, some dweeb tagged one of the cars and it had to go to the shop to get cleaned up. 🙁 🙁
Fortunately, for me that is, that stunt delayed it until Saturday and I was able to catch it, as they announced the ETA into Fremont on the local news. 🙂

DMR, Thanks for the wonderful photos. Union Pacific has been very good about keeping steam alive. I love steam engines but mine is a 1/8 scale 4-6-0 and only weighs about 600 pounds but it burns coal and has a North Carolina boiler license.
If you like that U.P. engine then wait a bit. They are supposed to be rebuilding a Big Boy which is quite a bit bigger than the 844. A Big Boy was capable of 80 miles per hour and worth about 6,000 horsepower. Joe

AND!! For the faithful amongst us--UP is the only major N American RR to have kept steam engines on their active roster since like forever--via the 3985 and the 844--the 2014 Big Boy will run again! And I'll be among the millions to watch it--over Sherman Pass!

I don't know all of the details but local chit-chat does say that they will have three (3 - count 'em - 3) working steam engines within the next few years, once one gets done with a fairly routine overhaul and another gets fully restored.
This was my first time seeing one of these operating up close. It's totally awesome! The scale is overwhelming. When it was parked (below) I guessed that the top of the main wheels was two feet over my head!
I'm very impressed at how clean they keep it!
I'm also very surprised at how smooth, quiet, and clean it really is. When it took off ("motion" photo above) it was a very smooth start, no jerking at all. There's also no big cloud of smoke puffing out of it, nor any of the expected loud "chug chug" noises.
I don't think I posted this one here on this board. It's when it was parked, odd light on an odd film. It's Rollei (Agfa) CN200 that I picked up mainly because I was curious about it. Takumar 28-80 zoom on the Pentax.

Michigan City, Indiana. 1989 or 1990 photo, Nikon FM2, 50mm/f1.8 AIS Nikkor, Plus-X, "scanned" with D7000 and AF-Micro-Nikkor 60mm/f2.8. There is a learning curve involved here but the unflattering high-sun light didn't do me any favors.

I would love to see one of the steamer's live and up close, here in New York
no steamers to be seen! The the only one I have up close is my American Flyer
version of that steamer.
