Well used M's - The anti-collectors

Blighmy Tom, I hope you are holding up better, I imagine you also sustained the same bashings.

The car doors had mostly to do with my habit of carrying three M's. One on each shoulder and one around the neck. What happens is that you forget the one on the left shoulder and when you slam the door shut - it can (and will) get caught! A friend slammed a Toyota door on his M4-2 - did some damage to the camera, but far more to the door!

Temptation to peel it off completly is great !

As long as it doesn't keep falling off I think it will just leave as is, first things first I have to get a new baseplate or maybe a rapidwinder and get the shutter working!!
On the upside everything else works and the viewfinder is nice and bright.

My M6TTL. Bought new in 2002, and been at my side every day since. I still tend to think of her as a new camera, but there's no denying her age.
Besides being incredibly dirty (you never notice till you get the macro lens out) she's showing some wear, mainly on the control surfaces and grip areas.
I've modded her a bit over the years. Black paint advance lever, new Aki Asahi covering, MP style battery cap. Just things that make her more enjoyable for me to use.

Leicas are singular in this: when new, they feel like an impeccably tailored tuxedo; and when used, like a well-worn and much-loved pair of jeans.

Nice thread, keep posting. In twenty years my MP might be ripe for joining this crew. 😀

Well said. The only other brand that fits this profile IMO is the Nikon F family. I won't post pics since this is a Leica thread but I understand the sentiment that surrounds these beautiful machines.

No doubt. Nikon rangefinders too. I've never had an F or an SP but that's mainly because I am trying to keep my fetish tally on the low side. (Without much success I might add. 😀) My plastic-fantastic Canon SLR looks like a joypad by comparison.

You guys are reminding me of the M I didn't buy once. On the outside it was mint. On the inside, there was an actual depressed track worn by film into the pressure plate. It had been used on a tripod at Fort Dix during the Viet Nam war, and before, to shoot input IDs of soldiers. It was available cheap, but I held off because of the wear I couldn't see.

What do you do with these besides taking photos? Are you using them as hammers, self defense, beer bottle openers?

🙂
