Dear wlewis,

I get that. I wasn't much of a wildlife photographer until I got back into photography with digital cameras. I couldn't afford the equipment needed back when film was the only medium. I had a Canon EOS Elan back in the day and 70-300mm USM lens. I muddled around with that for a while but when I got a Canon 20D and magically got 1.6 times closer to everything my interest was piqued.

Now that I've moved to a place where I live in "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" I can do it with digital and even film cameras. I enjoy landscapes and scenics too. I just like the outside world.

Tamron 38-100/3.5, yeah I have a thing for Tamron Lenses and a Minolta Himatic C [Sticky shutter but the first I've seen for a £10 with the battery door!] [EB Pics]

I succumbed at the end of last September and received at the end of last November the Leica Q3 43. I understand why it is a popular camera for the company. It is like a good friend, fun to have along, not a concert pianist but who can play the piano damned well. It is not the do-all or be-all but it merits notice and delivers good images with ease. I cannot afford it but at my age I am quite aware that shrouds do not have pockets so there you go.

I have some nice cameras and lenses but this little fellow is just so convenient. Small but not tiny. True, one lens, period. It does have the digital zoom which offers crop images up to the equivalent of 150mm, each with less data. OK, I said it is not perfect. It compromises on a lot of things but they are good, rational compromises. Here are links to some of what I have shot with it to give an idea of what the camera can do more than what I can do. I chose the 43mm because I liked how a CV 40mm worked on my M mounts and how the 35mm equivalent 43mm HB XCD 55V works. I like what this focal length sees. It helps my feeble mind to be able to capture what I see not an approximate view of what I see. I suppose that this is just a personal quirk but I feel better at this focal length.

I have 35's and a 28 for my M mounts but very rarely use them. For me it works. "Each to their own taste said the old lady as she kissed the cow because she had the tail to wipe her mouth." ;o)

I remember these when they were new. The company touted the lens with the advertising line something like, " .. . the lens alone is worth the price . . . " IIRC they were well reviewed but somehow never took off. Good luck with it.
