This is based on something approaching lifetime travel of 1M miles ...
Carrying over the shoulder camera bags, briefcases, and light luggage etc, wreaks havoc on your back and spinal health. I thus switched exclusively to backpacks when I travel, to balance the weight across shoulders and spine. My carcass has been grateful ever since. I recommend this highly for anyone who spends a lot of time shooting.
The one exception is when I am shooting on the street or in the moment. I pack a small 'buttpack" style bag like a Lowe Pro Photo Runner. I fill it with socks and such and put it in my luggage while traveling, carrying my gear on the plane in a backpack. When I get to destination and want to shoot in the street I use the Photo Runner, though I do take out the socks! I have replaced the strap on mine with something much longer that allows me to hang it cross body in front/to the side of me to allow quick access and discourage thieves.
This may not seem like much, but if you carry over shoulder with a full kit on any regular basis, IMO, your body is gonna hate you 😉

What you say is true and I agree. However I am not going to be walking long distances with this bag. It was chosen primarily for airline under seat stowage with good gear carrying ability. The backpack idea is good but I fear vulnerability to theft while it is being worn as a backpack.

Lowepro Flipside series. You literally can't get into the backpacks from the exposed portion of the backpack. It opens up against your back. So other than having the entire pack stolen it would be considerably harder for someone to pull something from the bag when you are wearing it.

Have you heard about razors? That is always what I fear, a thief with a very sharp cutting instrument. A backpack is more vulnerable to that. So for my paranoia and short carrying periods the Domke suits me better. Just another crazy old man.

You should have the same worry with your Domke. A razor or quick-cut on your strap and they take off with your entire bag.

I would be unaware of a slice and grab from a backpack. A side bag I would have my arm over it. I cannot eliminate all risk but I can avoid as much as possible. My normal camera bag is a ratty old thing that carries one camera, maybe two squeezed in but a bad idea. A pro I knew way back carried his M3 in a WW I canvas gas mask sack. He claimed that M3 "Has never been sullied by color film."

My current Every Day Carry for airplane travel and driving day trips is a Manfrotto Active 1 backpack. It will fit an M body, 3-4 lenses, a D-Lux digital, a Nikon D750, a Macbook Air, and the entirety of cables, chargers, batteries, filters. a Sekonic meter, and the various odds and ends for travel all in a small and well balanced pack. I do attach an auxiliary small bag to it with a strong carabiner to hold all my film. I carry a small carbon fiber tripod that fits comfortably in my checked luggage.
Upon reaching destination, I either sling the cameras over my neck or carry them in the aforementioned Lowe Pro for daily shooting.
After trying travel with all kinds of different style bags, the Manfrotto is my far and away favorite, balancing size, weight and layout almost perfectly. It also happens to fit quite nicely under and airline seat.
Over the past several years I have carried this configuration to Italy, Greece, and Alaska, not to mention all manner of shorter day trips, with great comfort and utility.

If someone is planning to rob you, they can put a gun on your head and ask for your camera. I remember advertising a similar bag like the Lowepro - they are trying to discourage the opportunists who want to do a quick grab and run.
Noone wants to steal my bag (**sigh**)

I choose not to worry about such stuff. In, what?, forty-five years plus of travel all over the world with camera gear, the biggest issue I've ever run into is when I put a bag or a backpack down somewhere and simply forget it. 🤷♂️
I generally don't use backpacks because I find them very inconvenient except for getting stuff from one place to another. I always have a small bag for the gear I want to use when shooting in addition to whatever backpack or travel bag that I use to cart the gear onto/off-of planes, trains, and automobiles. And I carry as little as possible. 🙂

It's a repaint....so not the original black paint motivation. Right? The Xenogon isn't common but doesn't go for that kind of money. I'm stumped. I'd bid $1500 and hope there aren't any worms in the woodwork.

Original black M2s are scarcer than a principled politician. But this doesn't appear to be the original but a repaint. Someone obviously doesn't get that this is the case. Either that, or its shill bidding of some kind.
A clean, well tuned repainted M2 is maybe worth $1500-2000 max.
