I have just picked up a shoebox-full of Ambico filters and holders with this set inside-- a blue, yellow and red set of rectangular glass filters...

Does anyone know what they are or how to use them?

Yep, they look like flash filters to me too

I would also say flash filters...Vivitar also made a set for the 283...one set was for different flash angles, wide angle to tele, and a set for special effects (blue, red, yellow, UV, ND4 & 85B)
The holder mounted on the flash can hold two filters...one from each set...
