What photo made your jaw drop lately?

Thanks for the first link, John. I've been on the lookout for Grapevine for awhile -- it's quite expensive on the used market. Nice to be able to see so many (all?) the images without having to drop $250. 😀

Welcome. Yes, it's nice to see something at least if we can't buy the book. I was able to buy one of her other books of amazon for $2.00. But, it wasn't grapevine. 🙁

Hah! Me too! Was it trip? I found it underwhelming, completely lacking the human interest of Grapevine since it was mainly surfaces and spaces in motels, restaurants, etc. (An attempt to be a black-and-white Stephan Shore perhaps?)

You must have the book, Trip. I have a copy of that and have been searching for a copy of Grapevine for a long time. Guess I'm not alone.

Also, if you are interested, her lecture at ICP is one that they have available on their archive...

I'd be interested in hearing that, but I get a 404 error with that link, Gary.

EDIT: Weird ... if I cut off the list.html then a page loads and one can click on a link for a list of all lectures from 1979 to present. That page when it loads, is the url you posted. Why a direct link doesn't work, I have no idea.

I think the forum has a policy of not posting actual images not done by the poster, only links (the URL) is allowed. It is a copyright issue at the very least.

Sorry, as the picture frame included name and website of the artist and I made a clear reference that this is his work, actually praising it, I didn't pay attention to golden rule #6.

I edited the post you quoted, i.e. deleted the picture itself, just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the reminder to keep myself or even more important RFF itself out of trouble. No bad feelings😱.

Just add an "l" to the tail end of the URL and it goes direct.

I don´t remember where I saw this picture for the first time (not long ago), it was in b&w and even more powerfull than this in color. http://mardecoisa.blogspot.no/2010/04/o-bom-do-violino.html

I was so touched by that photograph that I had to look up the story and run it through a translator:

The good of the violin

This photo by the photographer Marcos Tristao, 18.10.2009, was one of the most poignant images that I have seen in recent times.

The boy who cries in the photo is Diego Frazão Torquato, who played the violin in the Orchestra of the AfroReggae. The occasion was the burial of this social project coordinator, Evandro João Silva, murdered in Rio de Janeiro in October last year.

Diego contracted meningitis at the age of four, compounded by pneumonia, and stayed with memory difficulties. Still, learned the violin, which he played with emotion higher than technique. Diego, born and raised in the favela of Parada de Lucas, dreamed that the violin would know the world.

There was not time. Diego died yesterday, aged 12 years, victim of leukemia. As "doom pouca é bobagem", "her mother 37 years fighting a brain tumor.

Breathe deep.

Peace for who will. Strength for those who stay.

For me, this: http://www.luhringaugustine.com/exhibitions/joel-sternfeld_3/#/images/3/

From Sternfeld's 'First Pictures'.

I've also been looking for an affordable copy of 'Grapevine' for quite some time. A couple of weeks ago I saw a copy advertised for a good price (considering what the usual price range is) and purchased it. Now for the anxious wait (customs can be especially slow this time of the year in Greece).

PS. Thank you for the link.
