What were you shooting in 2001!

Ok hear me out,

Our Nations History (for those of us in the USA) was forever changed in 2001 for obvious reasons.

Coincidentally 2001 was around the time Digital cameras of all shapes were really gaining momentum in the consumer market. It would be another 6 years until the Nikon D3 or Leica M8 were announced. Cameras like the F5 and D1/h/x ruled Photojournalism. The Nikon N90s was to be discontinued and Camera Phones were new on the scene. Still we would wait another 5 years before Apple announced the first Iphone and we all know how that turned out!

What had you been shooting in 2001?

For me, I was still in grade school, shooting a Minolta XG-7 my dad bought for me off eBay (still in its infancy then).

I had a handful of primes a motor winder and the corner market still stocked both Kodak and Fuji slide films. (although as limited a selection as you would expect)

I bought one of the first D1 Nikons when they were introduced. Clients at first were reluctant to adopt digital but within a year most of them were wanting their work done digitally. In 2001 I was still shooting much of my work on my SL66 system, Nikon F5 and F100, Sinar Norma 4x5, Linhof Master Technika 4x5 and 8x10 Deardorff. I still used my Leicas but not to the degree that I used my Nikons. Much of the work over the years had migrated from 8x10 to 4x5 and then 6x6 and some 35mm then of course digital.

I do long for the days of film. If I could I'd go back to pre 2000 in a hear teat at least for much of my work.

For most purposes, my N90S loaded with Fuji Provia 100F. I often had either my FM2 or FA along (loaded with Kodachrome) for night photos because I liked the way K64 looked at night (and I didn't have the right kind of wired remote for the N90S).

We still had good local E6 processing options in 2001, plus I could still get quick processing service by dropping off film at Target. Not true anymore.

i hadn't started shooting in 2001, but i picked up my first semi-serious camera the following year - canon powershot S50. jesus.

looking back at the pictures from it, they're pretty decent.

Was on my Olympus OM1-OM2n kit. Large assortment of Zuiko lens from 24mm to 300mm, mostly stayed on the 35-105 mm range. The OM2n was a gift from my late father, same as a 55mm, 24mm and some others.

On film, mostly stayed on my all time favorite, Plus X, and Tri X- Tmax 400 when needed.

Still got the camera and use it from time to time (specially OM1 with 55 f1.2,love that lens 🙂 ), although I've been using rangefinder mostly for the last 5 years or so.

Wow, back then i was 19 and shot with a Eos 300 or a voigtländer Vito CLR with Ilford XP2 or Kodak "Farbwelt" colour negative.
Damn did i know little about photography, still i enjoyed it.

We (as family) just realized what family P&S has AF seized. So, we purchased super camera. Canon EOS 300 with kit zoom. Paid whooping 200+ USD for it. It required weird batters and if camera wasn't turned off, they were gone in no time.
I read the Manual and managed to squeeze couple of frames in Av mode. But 99.99% of it was taken with green box mode. Build-in flash was gentle. Always.

We still have it at home, but I sold the zoom lens. Last time I used it about five years ago with Canon 50L lens (also sold). Every time I want to use this camera again... crappy CR2 batteries are sold locally as 40+ CAD for two....

I had a Nikon N4004 but never used it. I preferred single-use cameras. I also had an underwater version of a Minolta Vectis. It looked a bit like a banana. Beautiful camera. (If you are a chimp.) I just didn't care. I remember a friend was talking about his EOS A2 and Fuji Velvia this or Fuji Provia that. He could be talking about cricket as far as I was concerned. It took a few more years from then... and a Leica M2. Then something clicked.

Lets see, I was about a year and a half into my last job, so I was probably concentrating on that mostly. But I still had my N90s and FM kits, and would occasionally bang off some Polaroids in the Crown Graphic Special. The Electro 35 GTN got some use, until the POD went out. Oh, and someone gave me a Kodak Cameo with an excellent 35mm lens that I enjoyed quite a bit.

Other than that I can't remember what else I may have used that year. Most of it got sold in 2005, though I've been able to replace some of them since then.

Good thread. I was still shooting my Minolta Freedom Zoom 35mm point and shoot at that time. My Minolta XG1 had been sitting in the bag for a few years, where it would stay until I dusted it off in 2015.

Around that time I dug out my Pentax MX and 50/1.7 having used a Minolta AFZ P&S for years before that, mainly because of my first trip to NYC. I also took along a 24/2 Vivitar lens a Tokina zoom. Olympus Trip 35 also got used. Not long after that, I came across RFF and it's been a downward spiral of GAS ever since.

I think it was in 2001 that I bought my first digital camera, a 2.1mp with 10x zoom Olympus C-700.
It came with an Adobe Elements photo editing software. And I remember having lots of fun editing pictures for the first time back then. I could spend the whole day playing with it.

I was also using an Olympus mju II/stylus epic at the same time.
