Which camera was contemporary with Summar?

a Leica III or a IIIa or even a IIIb
The other models like the II were still made to order , so even this one and the RF-less Leica Standard could be ordered with a Summar Lens.

My Summar came with a Leica IIIa. The two look like they were sold that way. The Leica III had a Nickel Elmar on it.

According to the Lens Production Tables in G Rogliatti's book (Leica and Leicaflex Lenses) the Summar started was built from 1933 to 1940. You'll need someone else to tell you which Leica camera was its contemporary.

I believe (based on my recollection of Rogliatti) that IIIc production began around 1940, also about the time the Summitar was introduced, which replaced the Summar. So I'm guessing the IIIb at least was contemporaneous w/ the Summar. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...

Robert,
I suspect YOU just bought a Summar
@getdpi ....😀

I thought about that one
Was it YOU ?
if so...CONGRATS !

AZOOB was the code for a 1938 IIIb with a Summar lens.
... all in chrome of course.

No, it wasn't me, but I did get one a few weeks ago on eBay. It turned out to be spectacularly clean. I've been using it on the M8, but now I am sending my M8 to NJ to have the sensor replaced and it'll probably be gone for three months. And I feel bad for the lens...😉

If I'm not mistaken, Leica's first series of ads featuring the Summar were with the III, billing it as "the night Leica". The IIIa, though, was probably the body paired with a Summar the most often, as a new camera/lens comb, in terms of raw numbers.

My early-1937 IIIa body was purchased new in the spring of 1937 with a Summar from the last batch made in 1936. The purchaser had just been graduated from medical school. I bought the camera from him in the early '80s when he no longer wanted, or could, deal with its very manual nature and needed a simple P&S.

I've just looked in "Leica the Camera of Modern Times" of April 1937 and the Standard and II came with the Elmar and the III and the IIIa came with the Summar. This was the European version of the book, I expect the NY, USA version will be different and, of course, the USA got supplies for a little longer than we did in England.

In any case the Summitar appeared in 1939 and eclipsed it a little. Alas, the first advert I've seen for it was September 1939 - a dreadful time to chose to launch a German camera in England...

!937 seemed to be the peak time for adverts for the Summar.

Regards, David
