Which Nikon SLR to sell? F, F2A, F3?

The F3 has a bit of history behind it. I missed bringing her to a college dance because I was working to get money that evening, and I used it on purchasing the F3. Probably a bad start there.

Then, I used to bring it with me everywhere. She felt that she was a spare tire to a couple of the F3 and myself. That made vacations awkward for her. Now she is wreaking vengence!

Robert, I *sure* hope you are semi-joking here.

Your wife and a camera and she felt left out?
I'm afraid it's not the camera that is the problem here. 😀

What are the first two digits of the serial number? If it is 77 it will be 1977, if it is 73 it will be 1973....or really close.

Sort of right , but not completely.
The first two digits of a serial number usually represented parts of two calendar years of production, so that it was possible to have cameras with different starting two digits produced in the same year.
And while I don't remember when it started, I know that in the latter years of their production the serial numbers starting with an even number (eg. 76, 78, 80), designated chrome bodies, while those starting with an odd number (77, 79) were black.
Thus there were cameras produced in 1975 that have serial numbers starting with 74, 75 and 76.

Sell the F, it is the least useful one of the bunch.

I have 5 of those so it grieves me to say this, but you're absolutely right.

OP:
The standard prism is worth a *lot* if it's pristine and late diopter capable. Ditch the MD4, maybe keep the F3. Keep the F2 but don't sell the M7. Ever. And for pete's sake stop all the CLA-ing, a lot of $ is going out the door on that and it's probably not even needed.

About the CIC; maybe yous need to talk this out. There's room to give on both sides I'd wager.

On the previous page someone wrote that "Ends badly" was written all over this : sensible people now may fully agree. Plus, this is getting quite ridiculous. "Commander in chief"... "sacrifice all of the Nikons"... "if the Nikon system survives"... "the Leica M7 is also on the chopping block"... "she" this... "she" that... hey, what kind of adult, open-minded and pleasant partnership do you have with the woman living in your house ?

Come on.

The cameras aren't the problem here. Even if you sold them all including the Leica this wouldn't solve the concerns you seem to have with your wife. I can predict you that even if you sell the F3 you will hear about that missed college dance evening in several years onwards from now.

The answers to your questions won't be found within an Internet photo forum I'm afraid.

Unless you are just teas... ahem, trolling us (clickable link)

I think it's just another F vs F2 vs F3 thread so I'll say sell the F and F2 and keep the F3. A much better camera with greater ease of use and proven reliability whatever the electronics bashers say.
The F has to be one of the most uncomfortable cameras to use with all it's sharp edges and rear shutter release and film changing is a PITA. Any F or F2 that hasn't been used constantly will be in need of a service so unless they have been get rid of them.

I'm not married but I watched that very type of behavior between my own parents for pretty much forever. My mom would dredge up various miscues, embarrassing moments or forgotten promises my dad made forty years earlier, all the time.

So my recommendation is - keep all three cameras and add an F4. Or a DF, D700 or D4.

Hi Shadowfox,
Sorry, I'm not joking. It did happen. It has soured her on photography forever.
As others have pointed out, even if I sell everything, she'll still be resentful.
Then I'll be resentful because I sold everything.

Not sure what you should do with the others but keep the F3 for spite.
Suggest also you build a shrine, a man cave furnished in a Nikon F3 motif.

Chris

Suggest to the CIC that you are deserting photography and taking up golf. After a while having stumbled over golf bags, clubs, shoes, carts and ugly pants - the CIC will go and buy you more cameras.
Photographers tend to be pack rats. You never know when you will need that gadget - but compared to the golfers I know we are truly minimalists.

I like that idea! Nikon probably made, what, a million or two F3s? Start a collection of them. I wonder how many would fit in the average spare bedroom? I suppose it depends how tight you make the aisles between the rows of shelving.

Commanders in chief shall not get involved in micro management.
You need more tools for the work, more fun with gear and you just live once.
My advice: buy the same gear that you have as spares !

Well, if it soured her that much, then you must've done something wrong. It wasn't so much photography as your lack of balance between your attention to it and the attention given to her. You could start by apologizing and explain how getting rid of some of those cameras that you like so much won't end up solving your problems... Also promising to balance your hobby with your wife is a good idea.

My wife has come to terms with my love for photography but I make sure to not let it rule my life.

I found that by taking mostly photographs of things that were important to her caused my late wife to accept my love for photography. This included a decent percentage of photographs of her.

I have a plain prism black f I've had since the late 70's. in that same time I've had countless S/O's and 3 wives.

Moral of story: keep the cameras.
