See, I always thought that word was "eh", said with the shrug of the shoulders. Then I read somewhere that our friends the Canadians say it, but pronouced it like "hey". "Nice weather this week, eh?"
I went to Vancouver BC several years ago and did not hear that word once.
Later, we went to a mountain resort a few hours drive from Calgary and met some guys (they'd be considered surfer dudes here) who used that phrase some. I think they mountain biked in the summer and were snowboarders during winter months.

... in the Yorkshire (UK) eh is pronounced eh? ... it's an invetation to an idiot to re-think whatever they had just mumbled

I would have voted 'gray' if there was such an option. 'Pickles' would have done it also. Now it's just another overrated poll.
