Who shoots with two standard lenses ?

Good you bring this up.
You know me already, I like to have options so most of the time is two bodies and two lens - 21/35 and 85 (sometimes the 105).
When there's only one camera, it's the old 50's. (the trouble is which one... decisions, decisions decisions! ;-) )

I frequently shoot a 50mm 1.2/85mm 1.8 combo when I carry two bodies. Those lenses on those cameras get to be too heavy sometimes though. Finances permitting, I think i'll try a 40/50 combo soon when I shoot available light indoors and at night.

Edit: The 40mm I would be considering is the 40mm f/1.4 for M-mount, since I already enjoy the field of view and wide-open DOF so much (equivalent to the 70mm 2.8 wide open on the Mamiya 645)

I carried a pair of Nikon SLRs with 35 and 85 (or 35 and 24, or 35 and 180) for so long that it became second nature. I really don't like changing lenses when I'm shooting.

Now I normally carry an M with a 35, or two bodies: an M with a 35 and a Nikon with the 85/2 AIS. The M is on a short neck strap or in my hand; the Nikon is on a longer strap, slung bandolier style behind my hip. Smooth nylon straps that don't catch on anything — no precious leather or crap rubber pads! With a tele I prefer the WYSIWYG finder of an SLR. The 85/2 is fast enough to keep the shutter speeds up, it's optically better-than-decent (though no 75 'cron, obviously), and it's very small and light on an FE/FM series body.

I have been using almost exclusively 35mm + 50mm (actually 60mm) for the last 6 months but I feel a growing frustration. Indeed, a lone standard lens can cover most situations in street photography with some footwork but usually I start with one, then as I switch I might go on with the other one. In other words, a situational change of lens often leads me no to revert to the previous lens. So when reviewing my pictures, I often feel a lack of homogeneity on a given day (dof, rendering) since I get long series of shots with one or another lens.

So I am considering a definitive change to 75mm. By doing so, I would force myself to always revert to 35mm once a scene where a needed 75mm close up is over.

I'd like to read about your experiences with shooting street photography with two standard lenses in your kit. By standard lens, I mean a 28mm, 35mm or 50mm focal. How many of you use mainly combos of the kind 28mm + 50mm or 35mm + 50mm and how do you deal the switches ? Is one of the lenses your main one or do you just go with the flow and use whatever is on unless a switch is absolutely needed ?

I've been using 35+50 for a long time now, and there's difference, naturally, but - if you're considering street shooting only, that's about 3 steps of difference and some space compression. I had hard time switching from 35 to 50 for street shots, then I realized that all I need to do is shoot - 3 steps sooner 🙂

Big difference is indoors, I find 50 to be way too tight, 35 is normal for everything indoors, and wide enough for normal shooting everywhere else...

28 - 35? Not worth bothering, not too big difference, both indoors and outdoors... it's there, but, only like one step or so...

I'd say, stick with 35+50 🙂
