Who's getting the New M?

It will be my first Leica digital. I am not on a list, because I have a lot better luck calling dealers when the time comes. I'll wait a couple months while all the "beta testers" try out firmware version 1.1, then I'll start calling around.

I am comfortable with my M9 and plan on keeping it for a long time. I am a fan of CCD sensors so the M won't give me anything more. Maybe I will wait until they upgrade it to the 'MP'... Hmmm, I think they used that before?

I'm in that camp. With you all the way.

P.S. Currently "chaffing at the bit" :)

want to get the monochrome first, before leica discontinues in a year time, who knows? there is always a new color M in the future.

I'm shooting my Fuji and Leica lens with the Fuji x-e1. It satisfies my digital curiosity. I have no desire or need for the Leica M.

I am waiting, hello X Pro 1 and M8

I skipped the m9 in favor of the new M. Thing is I bought an X Pro 1 as an upgrade from my M8 and am blown away by the Fuji image quality. Still in waiting mode regarding the M. I need to pay taxes soon and watch cash flow.

Because it's the best way to use a Leica lens with a digital capture body. I doubt the body is as disposable as you suggest. My M9 should be making photos for me for another five to ten years ... I rarely kept a film camera that long, although I have several that are older than that.

Yup, it's all about the ranger finder shooting experience for me, and the M is simply the best at the moment. Ergonomics are hugely improved from the M9.

Fuji will get there at some point with their hybrid viewfinder, and APS-C sensors will catch up to where FF is now, but there's a way to go.

My M9 gave 3+ years of trusty service, which works out as under £1500 a year, which is significantly less than I was spending on film. I could have traded it in to reduce the cost, but I'm quite attached to it, and it's possible that it will be better for low ISO long exposure than the M, we'll see.

There's a lot of "man maths" going on here, to justify the cost, but why not :)

Honestly, if they'd brought out an M9.3, with just the M's ability to take the GPS grip, and M shutter, I'd have bought it (but not pre ordered). Add in live view, the better screen, the thumb rest, and the new frameline illumination — it's a no brainier.

Any longtime Leica shooter who handles an M is going to be very tempted. If you can't /really/ afford it, don't try one, it will be bad for your financial health!

Here's hoping my M9 will continue taking pictures every bit as well as when new M9s were unobtanium.

But I do have an order in for the M--time marches on.

bit surprised to see so many RFFers already made the jump. personally cant even afford used M9, so... yeah.

it would be perfect tool not only for M/LTM lenses, but lot of other lenses in front of full frame sensor, earlier reduced to scale focusing only.

The M definitely sounds interesting. I'm still crazy about my M9 so selling it is out of the question. I have a dozen fine lenses for my M system so no pangs of hunger for more glass.

I have a couple of bodies for other mounts/formats alongwith a harem of lenses and the NEX7 is one of them.

Somehow, most of the files I get from the nex7 with a Leica lens attached are dull and flat. Beats me. Noctilux f1 v4, Summilux 35 asph and Cron 90 asph - all gave me dull, flat files.

Same body with a ZM 50 1.5 gives great results and of course, great results with E mount lenses. Go figure.

Anyway, while I'm very tempted by the M, I will wait for awhile to see beyond the first firmware fixes and if Sony do release a FF EVIL camera.

I don't really care what brand I'm sponsoring and advertising for as long as the pictures make me happy

I found the NEX7 to be pretty decent in terms of layout and usability. Some quirks here and there but no deal breakers. If Sony come out with a similar if not slightly bigger form factor and their best sensor offering at half the cost of the M, I'll get one for sure

Need to see more images and video quality from the M. The publicized ones so far wernt too impressive unlike the ones Leica put out for the M9 that had me pick up the phone instantaneously

Nonsense. The "best" way to use x, y, or z lens just because its the newest 10,0000$ toy from Leica? You could save yourself thousands of dollars by not contributing to this madness by simply using what you have. I don't even have a digital Leica and I'm not missing a single second of it so in the end who really benefits?

Technology is no replacement for anything. Thinking the latest and greatest will somehow benefit the quality of your photographs is a fool's game.

now I've seen the light. clayne's way is also way for the rest of us, me included. I stop jonesing anything digital Leica makes for the rest of my life because its a madness and fools game.

It's not my way by any means. No one has a gun to your head forcing you to buy this new camera. People think they need this new camera but its the same old bull**** race at the end of the day.

Pull your head out of the game and you'll realize what it is if you don't already. Otherwise be a slave to the silicon. It's your $$$ that they want.

Uummmm..I've taken many photographs over the years on digital cameras, mostly Leica, that I could never have taken on film. Or images with lenses like the Summilux 24 that no other lens could have rendered.
It is naive to think that the properties of the tool have no effect on the outcome. Why limit yourself?

Because limitations produce results.

There's a thread here about people's M9 shutters breaking after relatively few actuations, compared to old film camera's expected meantime between failure. There are enough people I've talked to who've had electromechanical problems with digital leicas to keep me away. A $300 Panasonic g1 or a $800 OM-D or Fujifilm camera won't hurt as bad if it craps out, as a multi-thousand dollar Leica. So why are people paying so much for Leicas again, if not for durability? A tiny sliver more of sensor size doesn't warrant getting one for me.

I was fortunate enough to ring around and score a M9 in April of 2010, from the second batch that reached Australia, brought in as stock and not spoken for. When the M was announced I figured I would use the same tactics and wait until the first users found all the bugs, so I would be aware of any potential pitfalls, then start doing the rounds later in the year.

The first user reports are coming in and I'm beginning to regret not making a preorder! But then, I'm less cash-solvent than I was at that time, and putting $8000 into a new camera body is something I have to consider even more carefully than before. At this time, I'm sticking with my original plan to wait for the first users to iron out the bugs, and to find out whether the video output is good enough to use alongside the 5D Mark II/III.
