That is rather a moot point. If all air suddenly vanished, we'd even have to give up breathing. But a "film literally vanishes while the more complex digital remains in knowledge or existence" scenario could only be a process of divine or extraterrestrial collective brainwashing - no more likely than being attacked by the Mega Maid. If it comes to a mere "factory made or shop purchasable film vanishes", you have to allow for alternatives from workshop made to mail order...

dave, you are very active in this thread of yours, running down or making light of any post that takes a different point on your query. i fail to see how your query doesn't just merely bear-bait the useless film/digital distinction, and serve to inflame the futile discussions that stem from it. why bother?

Now here's a shock for you all ... just after Xmas I was at one of the major shopping centers here in Brisbane looking for clothing bargains and wandered into a well known camera/photography dealer ... 'Bentley's Camera House.' There was the usual aray of digital rubbish (sorry couldn't help that) and a selection of pimply faced kids to sell the digital rubbish (sorry again) to you if you so chose!

Curious to see if they still stocked film I had a bit of a scout around and sure enough in amongst all the digital dross (sorry once more) was a little stand with about five different types of fim on it ... one that caught my eye was Kodak BW400CN, a popular C41 process black and white.

$14.99 per roll ... !​

wow! i really must consider myself lucky as i have yet to pay more than 2.50 CND for a roll of color OR b+w.

I'll never give up photography, whether the recording material is film or digital (and for my business, digital is a definite necessity). I've been in this game since I was 12, and it's really a part of who I am.

I will, however, be giving up a few camera systems that I have. My Rollei SL66 system is going, as is my Asahiflex system, and quite possibly my Contax I. Not that I don't like them, but they just aren't being used, and they can probably be more productive in other hands.

I shoot about 2/3rds:1/3rd film to digital at the moment so it wouldn't be too big a disruption. I would probably upgrade to a full-frame sensor from my current 'antique' D200 though.

I would miss film if it went, but it won't disappear in my lifetime.

I would just buy as much 35mm as possible & freeze it. Film is never gone, if you make your own.

I shoot big cameras too & love home brewed, silver gelatin on glass, paper.

I would miss my medium format camera, but larger is better.

Clarification: I have used and own digital cameras. I just do not currently use them for picture taking. Perhaps if they were not so damn expensive to get the same results I get with medium format, and the batteries were not so heavy, I would consider it.

So, yeah: I would use digital assuming it improved. I just would be less than thrilled about it.

three weeks ago I paid £5-60 for a roll of HP5+ at Jessops - York, yes - someone will no doubt tell me how to do it cheaper with bulk rolls, but given the amount I use these days, I don't want to go this way again. Michael, we will be o.k. soon - when all these budding chemists start posting 'how to make film' threads!

Well I`m not one to miss out on a party so I just bought myself some chems today from Lancaster. I`ve got 49 m of APX 400S to use . I used to do a bit of printing 20 years ago but for some reason never have dev my own film. My initial responce to this thread was a definate maybe. Now I thought some more and the answer is , no I wouldn`t give up.

I like slide film. We've been together for 33 years, and we're very happy together, so barring the unforseen, I'll continue to use it.
However, if film disappears, or becomes prohibitively expensive or massively inconvenient to purchase or develop, I'll make the switch to Digital.
