Leica LTM wrong hood, what gives?

Hi everyone
I had been looking for a hood for my Leica Elmar 90mm f/4 for a while. Eventually I just ordered a reproduction hood for it (so I thought). When I got the hood today I found out that the thread diameter on the hood was too big for the thread mount on the front of the lens. Did this ebay seller screw up or did I (quite possible)? What is this hood supposed to fit? Where can I get a cheap version of a hood that will work for my Elmar 90/4?

Your Elmar 90/4 has a 34mm filter/hood thread diameter. Later versions of the Elmar 90mm, and many 90/2.8 and 135mm Leitz lenses have 39mm threads. Your hood probably has a 39mm diameter.

Doh! :( Thanks for the information.

Is the IUFOO the correct hood for my Elmar? Are there any cheap alternatives? Or how about adapter rings?

The correct hood for your lens is the FIKUS. I had the same problem as you when I bought a 13.5cm Hektor for my rig. In my case, I already had a newer 90mm Elmar with the threaded front end and a IUFOO/12575 shade. I ended up buying a SOOGZ adapter on EvilBay so I could use my existing shade and 39mm filters with the Hektor.

This is not the cheapest soluton, but IMHO, it is the most practical, since it allows you to use the more common 39mm threaded filters with your lens, and if the your filters have female threads on the front, you can screw your current shade into the filter. The SOOGZ will also work with the 3.5cm Summaron and the IROOA or 12585 Shades.

There is a SOOGZ available on the Auction Site with a Buy It Now price of $58.88 plus $5.00 shipping . I am not the seller, I'm just passing along the info. Here is the link if you're interested;

While the SOOGZ may accept clip-on hoods for E39 lenses, but it doesn't accept E39 filters. It takes the Summitar (Type L) filters, which are far rarer than A36 filters.

The SNHOO is the adapter from A36 to E39, and they go for close to $100 each, when you can find one.

Sorry John, but that is not correct. The SOOGZ IS the ring that allows you to use E39 hoods and filters on a A36 lens. The SNHOO is the adapter that allows one to use E39 filters on the Summitar. I have both the SOOGZ and the SNHOO and I can assure you that the SOOGZ is the correct adapter for using E39 filters on a lens that originally took A36 filters.

The SNHOO is a rare bird, but they can sometimes be found for quite a bit less than $100.00, I managed to get mine on Evilbay of all places for about $ 20.00 plus $4.00 for shipping from The Netherlands. Of course it took nearly 3 years of searching to find one.:eek:

Oh, shoot, you're right Zathras! So many adapters from the German elves in Wetzlar, with strange 5 letter code names.

I'd sure like to have a SNHOO, but not for $100.

That's okay John, I know that there is an adapter to use Summitar filters on a A36 lens, but I couldn't tell you which one it is to save my life. I only know about the others because I was lucky enough to find them at a reasonable price.

If If I ever lost my SNHOO :eek: I would probably be forced to get a 'cron or a CV 50 if I needed to use filters with a 50mm. They are really tough to find even at $100.00! I still have a favorite search on eBay set up to email me if a SNHOO comes up for sale, but I haven't received notification for many moons now.

why not use the lens hood that was made for the Canon 100mm f3.5 .
it fits the 90/4 Elmar with the 34mm dia. thread , it works well, not as costly , it is not as rare as the Leitz product and looks real swell.

Wow, I feel like a complete bonehead right now. I have the Canon 100mm f3.5 and hood for it. Never thought to try it on the Elmar. It fits perfect.

Leica did not intend the threads that you see on the front of the lens for filters or hoods. They are for assembly and disassembly. Other third party cheapos have made hoods, etc., but the FIKUS is the real thing everything else is aftermarket, so be sure it fits.

The FIKUS hood and A36 filters are correct for Chad's Elmar, but my 90 is newer and it definitely uses the the IUFOO hood and E39 filters. It is not possible to mount A 36 filters or the FIKUS hood on my lens. No argument here, just my observation based on the picture of Chad's lens and the equipment I own,

Well, that sounds like crazy talk (;)) especially considering Leitz made a range of 34mm screw-in filters for the 13.5cm Hektor, 9cm Elmar, and 5cm Summar. I have several myself, including one with the old red box (FIOOC). Every 34mm filter and hood I have that is contemporaneous with the 9cm Elmar fits fine (including those made by Leitz, Canon, Minolta, Topcon, and Ricoh).

Besides, who would argue over such a thing?
