X100 Polarizing filter vs. the lens hood?

I'm considering buying this as opposed to getting a lens hood which probably blocks a quite a big area of the optical viewfinder as I really do take advantage of the extra space around the framelines to see what's happening in the scene.

Any opinions for and against? Will this help against direct sunlight?

As far as I understand them, neither POL filter or hood help against direct sunlight. Construction of lens and mostly, coatings do. Polarizer is specialty filter and hood is more useful thing for me. But that's only me.

By direct sunlight I mean almost direct.

Polarizer isn't going to help from "almost" direct sunlight - it removes reflections on certain surfaces and as side effect, darkens sky if sun shines under certain angle to filter.
Hood helps as long as sun rays get blocked from hitting lens by hood. Again, depends if "almost" is rather direct or rather at angle, enough to not allow them to directly shine on front element.

You decide but I've never have seen polarizer used instead of lens hood.

pol and hood are 2 very different things...i never use a pol but always use a hood.

Some people really LOVE this filter on the X100 --- others totally HATE it!!! It's a very polarizing topic.

It wil make the flare even worse, as any extra glass surface will do.
Just use a hood. Best for protection and glare. Use one with the cut-outs for unobstrucitve sigth.

Can the filter be added to the hood then? I might have to get both since I really miss having polarizing filter like I did back in 2006. Weird that I still didn't know it doesn't help against flare. Maybe I over estimated it's use and always used a hood with it. Can't remember.

Michael, which hood are you referring to? I haven't bumped into a one like that. Link?

I bought the JJC adapter and hood and have been pretty happy with it. I was initially concerned with how much it would block the OVF, but I'm not finding it that intrusive at all.

Having said that I've got a 49mm linear polariser on the way for those times when I need to cut through the glare.
