A digital camera with a modular, easily replaceable sensor. That way, if you had an older digital camera that you really liked from an ergonomic perspective you could simply upgrade the sensor as the manufacturer introduced more advanced models.

I'm thinking of this mostly from a DSLR point of view but I guess it could work for high-end P&S cameras, too (I'm talking to you, Canon G7).

Is such a thing even possible? I wonder if any manufacturers are working on it...

The medium format backs are interchangeable and there are quite a few to choose from, both cropped and fullframe. 39mp is the latest and greatest for Hassy I believe.

The Kodak DCS series based on the F5 were basically interchangeable backs also. They were _huge_.

I doubt this is going to happen in the future any more for small format. Like Kin said, Kodak had the Nikon based cameras some of which could be converted back into film cameras again. Kodak is no longer in the dSLR field. Nikon has all but abandoned the film SLR line, and is entirely focused on the DX format. Leica had the R8/R9 with DMR module. Kodak and Leica show that the concept can work. But for the digital M8, Leica decided to go with an all in one solution again, notwithstanding the enormous M-camera user base.
