the seller lists ALL the parameters ( viewfinder, optics etc ) are 100%. and a CLA -- so hoping I'll get a decent one this time.....

I’ve been looking and dithering over motorcycle boots for a few weeks. My old Doc Martens 1914s are fine but they don’t have ankle protection etc like proper motorcycle boots. Anything that I liked was $400 CDN and up and I really didn’t want to go down that road, so to speak. But I didn’t want to buy cheaper boots only to find out that, well, they were cheap for a reason.

Enter eBay — a quick search for a pair of boots my size located in Canada led me to this pair of Gaerne waterproof leather boots. I rolled the dice and crossed my fingers as the indicated size 46/11/28.5J didn’t quite line up (46 is more like a 12, but 11 and 28.5J seemed to correspond). They arrived today and they’re a great fit. Big enough to accommodate a thicker pair of socks but not so big as to be too big. A Goldilocks fit indeed.

Price for all this Italian goodness? $102 CDN including tax and shipping. Molto bene Vincenzo, molto bene.

I just snagged a secondhand Panasonic 100-300mm II for less than half of street price. It equates to 200-600mm on full frame in a lens about the size of a Monster energy drink, and lighter to boot. Too bad this came up at the end of Australia's football season, but there will be track and field early next year, then we're back to football. I chose this as the 100-400mm in Panasonic and Olympus are a bit out of the budget right now, and this lens is considerably lighter, too. Eventually I will get either the Panasonic or Olympus 100-400, but this will absolutely do in the meantime.

Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to return the 100-300. It's very, very soft at the long end, so much that I wonder if it is even acquiring focus accurately. Distant horizon images are soft as heck, with shapes but little detail. This is at f7.1-8, with a shutter speed of 1/800-1200. It seems better at mid distance and short distance, but that's not why I bought this lens. It's going to go back, and the money will go towards the Panasonic 100-400 after all. As time goes by, I'll upgrade from the G9 to the GH7 for the phase detection.

It is great software. Brian, the developer, is also excellent to work with. I've found a few bugs over the years and he usually has them fixed within a week or two of reporting them.

If you remove this screw, there is another tiny screw in there. It is not easy to see as it is deep inside but it you put a small screwdriver (like one for glasses) you can set the rangefinder. No need to remove the top for this.

And given that it’s a Soviet camera, is there still another even smaller screw behind that one?

At a camera fair in Adelaide yesterday I bought a P. Angenieux 28mm f3.5. I have been keen to try an Angenieux lens for some time now given their reputation, but they as rare as hen's teeth in Australia and this is the first time that I have so much as seen one (in stills camera mount as opposed to movie camera mount) in the flesh, let alone held one. This one is in absolute mint condition cosmetically, mechanically and optically. While I am not normally given to buying 28mm lenses, these being a little too wide for my liking I could not pass it up and am determined to give it a good try if it means I can use this lovely lens. I have made a couple of shots, taken around my home, stopped down half stop to f4 and seem to show very good optical characteristics. Once I download them to my P.C. I will upload one or more to this thread.

Here is the lens. (A stunning looking thing it is too - even better in the flesh! The vintage silver Canon UV filter is just the "ticket" too - matching the chromed rings on the camera nicely.)

Mine is in Exacta mount. However the lens originally came in various mounts such as Leica mount, Alpa etc. Financial value varies, with Leica being most expensive to buy, based on what I have seen. Of course I use mine on digital so, as long as I can find a suitable mount adapter I care not a jot about the actual mount on the lens. 🙂
