What have you just BOUGHT?

Picked up a decent D700 couple weeks ago, $350 US 40k shutter, looks mint, not a scratch, likely kept in a closet unused for years. The colors & image quality I think are excellent, files easy to work with, it doesn't seem like 'only' 12mpx. I think there's something to the fuss & not just hype. Built like a tank but not as heavy/bulky like a D3.

Optical finder is a pleasure to use, while the flickering arrow/dot nails manual focus for me easier than peaking on mirrorless. Didn't think I'd ever say that or own another DSLR. Better imo colors/usage/features than any other Nikon I owned/rented before (N50, D50, D5100, D600 owned/sold; D800/D3/D7100 rented).

('Standard' color profile, 55/2.8 ais, 1/640, f/11, iso200--- edit, I underexposed 1 stop, lifted p/p)
The D700 was a photojournalism powerhouse. For those who didn't need the D3's speed, the smaller size and 90% identical set of features on the D700 made it perfect for the job. I shot some of my best early photographs on that camera.

Searching for a Super Ikonta I stumbled on an auction for what I think is a much rarer camera. Price was too high and there were no bids so I made the seller an offer of what I’d pay if there were no takers. No one bid and he accepted my number. Condition looks great. This Bessa RF or Bessa E Messer with Heliar lens is on the way to me.IMG_9938.pngIMG_9940.pngIMG_9937.png

I've just purchased a pre war Voigtlander Vito 1. I've yet to receive it but will add some pictures when it arrives.

Apparently only between five and ten thousand were made before WWII broke out, so it's kinda rare. I aim to keep this as a working camera, so need to learn its CLA requirements but I imagine the mechanics are much more basic than post war cameras.

Wow - if I'm right (which is unlikely) that's a pre-WW2 model, or maybe early post-WW2, looks in fabulous condition.

Annoyingly, this is a short preview, but that's Field Marshal Montgomery's Bessa: Voigtländer Bessa - I have a longer article form Amateur Photographer.... somewhere!

You will love that shutter release, certainly the best of any camera that era I've ever used, and one of the nicest full stop.

I wouldn't be so sure - given the state of post-war Germany, a lot of early post-war camera production was very similar to pre-war. I suspect the main difference between pre and post-war Vitos (at least the original folding version) is that the post-war ones have sprockets for perforated film. I may be wrong, of course, never having seen an pre-war one!

I asked AI about it and that was its answer. AI doesn't lie!!

I believe it is pre war. I’ll see if I can figure out from he serial number when it arrives. Yes the condition is fantastic on both the camera and case. I was shocked to see the 645 mask still with it. I think there’s a type 2 with chrome top as opposed to the Bessa II from the 50’s???? I could be wrong as well. I couldn’t read that article but I’d love to. It’s behind a paywall.

If I decided the serial number on the lens correctly the lens was 1937.

I'll see if I can find the AP article and scan it - that preview is annoying, isn't it?

For comparison, this is my pre-war Bessa, much lower spec model with Voigtar triplet (and mask too, very neat sliding masks in viewfinder to suit it):

And my post-war Bessa - again, much lower spec. Not that I am jealous of yours... much!
