24mm, 28mm or 35mm M39 screw mount lenses

Hi

I'm looking for wide angle lenses of around the 24mm, 28mm or 35mm range.

I plan to use them on a Leica IIIC, or one of my Feds. Also possibly via an adapter on my Nex 7, if anyone has any experience with that (the Jupiter 8 works really well).

I've been using the Jupiter 8 and it's wonderful, IMO.

Has anyone got any recommendations for wider angle lenses? I've seen Jupiter 12 selling fairly cheaply, but what is the quality? Are there any others I could be looking at?

Happy to spend a few hundred (but not thousands).

I can recommend you warmly the Voigtländer 25/4 snapshot-skopar.
Uncoupled, scale focus, but click-stops at 1; 1,5 and 3m.
Easy to use (after some practise).
Very fine lens.

jupiter 12, works for the film, but may not works for the nex7
i have one, image quality wise is worth twice or more, than the price.
Voigtlander skopar 21mm is another small light lens for your film body, if i want "everything sharp" picture, i'll put this lens on my camera.
Talking about image character, somehow i like jupiter 12 more than the skopar. YMMV

+1. The CV Skopar 28/3.5 is also outstanding and built like a tank. Harder to find these days than the CV Snaoshot Skopar 25, though.

Yep, others have reported Jupiter 12 not working with Nex. Not sure why.

Stay away from the Russian 28mm (Jupiter 69 IIRC). It was designed for the Chaika half-frame 35, and I've been told it will vignet horribly on a full-frame. Tempting looking though, with it's pancake barrel.

I'd recommend the CV 28mm/3.5. A very good lens that is very small. You can zone focus before taking the shot and with the hot shoe VF this makes for very quick shots.

CV 28/3.5 is a great lens with modern characteristics (contrast, color, sharpness).
Canon 28/2.8 and 28/3.5 are great for a more vintage look.
Nikkor 28/3.5 LTM is very good too, but hard to find in good condition, and takes hard-to-find 34.5mm filters.
The above are in descending size order, more or less.

For 35mm, the same suspects: CV 35/2.5, Canon 35/2.8 (a real price-performer), Nikkor 35/2.5 (very good lens, again with the 34.5mm filters). There's also the Leica 35/2.8 Summaron, which can be had in screw mount, and is a superb lens, but pricier than the others. And, if you have money to spend, the Konica UC-Hex 35/2 is hard to beat.

For 25mm, I love my Canon 25/3.5. Not so easy to come by, but not impossible, if you're willing to spend $500 or so.

I use the Nikkor 35mm 2.5 on both my IIIc as well as my Tower 3. A terrific little lens that I absolutely love. The filters and lens shade from my Elmar 50 3.5 work perfectly with it as well. Cuts down on the bulk when I am walking about. About the only downside is that it is a bit of a heavy little bugger.

I've used a Canon 35/1.8 a lot and like it. They are cheaper than the 35/2.0 for some reason, but are also very good.

I use the three CV lenses mentioned above: 25mm Snapshot-Skopar; the 28/3.5 Skopar; and the 35/2.5. My CV 25/4 is not rangefinder coupled, but you don't really need that with such a short focal length. These are just the right size for my IIIc cameras, keeping them small and compact, as a IIIc was meant to be. I can carry one IIIc with the 35 in one vest pocket, and another with 28 or 25 in the other, or else around my neck. That, along with a D-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4, was all I needed for a month in France.
