50/2 Dual Range Summicron

Hello!
I am thinking to buy 50/2 Dual Range Summicron for my R-D1s.
The Epson site stating that it cannot be used on rd.
Does anyone has any experiences mounting this lens on rd?

Not directly, but I have this lens. It should mount on an R-D1s, but you won;t be able to use the closeup part of the lens with the close up viewfinder, due the different shape of the top and placement of the rangefinder windows between a Leica and a R-D1s. The close up viewfinder , when fitted, depresses a ball bearing which allows the lens to the focussed in the close up region. So although you could mount it AND manually depress the ball bearing, you'd have to focus close up with no rangefinder .ie. zone focussing.

Yes, I would agree - its a realy nice lens - beautiful sharp neatives with good contrast and a good range of greys too...It produces nice colour shots to, with an 50's look to them, which I really like. If you are not worried about the close - up abilities, you can often find 'cheaper' DR's if they are missing the goggles or 'eyes'.

If you can't get the DR Summicron to close focus on a camera, why not get the Type I Rigid Summicron instead?

Both lenses use the identical lens module. Only the focus mount is different. You will not have any problems with the Type I Rigid mounting/dismounting on the camera.

Regarding the Bessa R2, Stephen Gandy writes " Leica Dual range Summicron 50mm F2 -- won't mount properly due to internal body restrictions". The RD-1 is based on the Bessa. I suspect the same problems might apply.

Quite possibly, although my Summicron DR appear to be fine on my Bessa R3M - cloe focus aside of course. - Stephen Gandy is not normally wrong about these things though, so I would be cautious about getting a Dual Range without being able to test on camera. Best option would be to go for the Type 1 Rigid as Brian suggests.

What Brian said. Get a rigid Summicron - identical optics. Also the rigid is much lighter than the dual range probably because it doesn't have the extra mounting bits for it to fit into the goggles (just theorizing here).

I find the 50 DR Summicron on the R-D1 to be spectacular.

It oddly enough is truly incompatible with the Leica M8! So at this point I can only use it on my R-D1.

I used the 50 DR on an RD1, it produced extremely good images so I second Joe's experiences.

The end of this thread has convinced me to get a dual range summicron 50 for my R-D1 so I'll let you know if it was a waste of money (because it seems it definitely won't work on a M8 if and when I ever graduate).
