Hi, everyone! I am so glad I can find this 70mm film club and learn so much staff about 70mm film developing. I was shooting 70mm film for a while, I got a Watson 70mm film loading tank last year, and built a plastic bucket developing tank with plastic reel.

70mm Kindermann dev tank filled with Kodak Surveillance film up to 70 exposures now ready to develop. Single Paterson 70mm reel hacked by me to fit) fully loaded with 24 exposures Kodak Aerial Recon Film (this is the razor thin stuff comes in 500 foot roll). Tall Paterson System 4 (hacked by me) holds two 70mm 24 exposure length rolls, plus a roll of 35mm Eastman XX movie film.

This Kindermann tank is a chemistry hog (requires nearly a full gallon) and is -very- slow to fill and dump. Allow at least a minute for filling and draining. Also weighs a ton when full. A unique tool.

All tanks are fully loaded and ready to soup. This is a bit of film! and will help clear some backlog 🙂
 
Aright! I’m here, long time onlooker of your 70mm posts... I have taken a month long bike trip exclusively shooting 70mm. I’ve tracked down a reel, and 3x 100ft rollei 400 rolls of 70mm perforated film. I’ve dip and dunked developed it all and had nothing but problems.... I’m seeing that the rollei is now out of stock. And I have given up and switched back to 120 ilford film. Is there any film aside from hp5 out there? And is there hope to find a daylight tank??? I have lost my motivation and all my shots from my month long bike trip have been ruined due to not having a tank 🙁 what are my options?
 
I'm using right now the modified Paterson System 4 tanks, which I did load up yesterday. Up to about a 24 shot length of 70mm film (one or two rolls depending on the size of the tank). Twenty four shots is a good amount for me and the Paterson is easier to handle over the nearly one gallon Kindermann or Nikor 70mm tanks. Dedication and patience are needed to find 70mm film, and you have to sometimes settle for outdated. For my style of shooting I tend to bracket extra frames to give myself a choice. What developer did you use? I've seen good reports and photos with Rodinal. I myself use Rollei Supergrain developer from Freestyle for 400s. Cal has gotten good results with 120 400s and Diafine.

If you are good with your hands you can build this 70mm tank from Paterson System 4 which is around here and there. I use a Unicolor Uniroller to spin the long Paterson, I used to run everything this way back in the seventies. TomA did it this way, too. All my expired 70mm B&W I bought on Ebay

JOBO made 70mm reels and a tank for it, I'm not familiar with it, but it's another option. Also I did make a JOBO 24 exp 70mm reel from a 120/220 reel and an old Efke 25 film can. Glued it all together with Duco Acrylic Cement and it fits my Jobo 2500 series Multitanks. So I can run 120/220 and 70mm at the same time
 
I used rodinal the first few times, stand development. I have since switched to d76 1:3 for the 400 speed. The high acuteness of rodinal seemed unconventional and lacked shadow detail. I still have 100ft of rollei 400 and an amazing find of Panatomic x (just a NOS canister I got on eBay for 10$!!) so I am waiting to use that till I figure out my development situation. I may have bought the last few rollei rolls from your link on micro direct. Seems out of stock. I think shooting it as if it were 220 in 25 exposure rolls makes the most sense. I will report back when I get my hands on some Patterson reels and modify them like you laid out. I was wondering about exhaustion of chemistry with my results is there a certain amount of surface area that chemistry can develop at once. I was using 2000ml to develop 75 ish exposures rodinal stand and I was getting density variance laterally. I didn’t bother scanning or printing them. The thought was that stand would increase shaddow detail and then not require a daylight tank.. 1:50 or 1:100 would also not use much chemistry. All in all, I would recommend not doing that! Lol also have you seen rollei come back in stock after being out of stock? Are they still producing it? Thanks your are an inspiration and a wealth of knowledge!
 
Rollei 400s is actually Agfa Aviphot Aerial Film, intended for aerial mapping. I bought a fresh roll from an Agfa Dealer in Florida with an Aerial Mapping Company. Later on Rollei has this same stuff, no question about it.

It's not 400 EI not even close. It's more like 100 and I would bracket a test roll and then you will know. I can't imagine stand would work well, that's a lot of square footage to develop.

TomA introduced me to ADOX Borax MQ (D76 derivitive) which is cheap to make and uses a replenisher. I use this with Kodak Surveillance and it gives really solid beefy negatives with lots of shadow detail. I use it straight in gallons, mix it myself, and replenish it.

Last time I inquired to the German dealer he said they had about hundred rolls left in stock, that was a few years ago. Some will try this stuff and not like it, maybe you can find a deal? It took me ten years looking hard to accumulate what I have now, which is a 70mm smorgasboard basically.

I have an internet friend that has made initial inquiries with another Agfa Dealer, who said possibly Agfa would make some more if they had an order big enough. I don't have any info other than that so it is a possibility. Any interest here? I'm not interested in distributing this I'm just putting this idea out here.

Kodak Surveillance reminds me a lot of the older Tri-X emulsion.
The sun was just out of the frame upper left corner. The circular garden works well with the Hassy Fishy lens.

Hi Dan, do you have the Kodak number on that surveillance film? I've shot the Dacomatic 5461 in 35mm, but have not been able to find it for sale anywhere. I really loved that film.

A Military Surplus place in California put this up on Ebay. I bought a roll and tried it. They had half a case so I called back and bought all of it. It has stickers with govt contract number on each box.

Kodak says this will push up to EI 3200. So far I have only used it like old Tri-X and it performs like it ^^^.

I am new to this forum and I recently purchased a roll of the Ilford HP5+ 70mm from B&H. My 70mm mag for my 500c is currently being serviced by David Odess. I'm using 70mm to give me 70 exp for shooting it underwater since I don't have $6k for the new digital back.

However, I have been unable to find a lab here in the States that will process the 70mm in a 16 ft length. There is a place in LA that can do it, but they would have to cut the film down to shorter lengths prior to processing, which isn't ideal. However, my current plan is to calculate how many frames in a given length, then skip a frame, which will be where the film gets cut.

My question is, does anyone know of any labs that can process the 16 ft length? I've been trying to find 70mm darkroom equipment, but we all know the answer to that. Does anyone here know of any home developers in the California Central Valley that could do it?

Another thought...I was a savvy CAD draftsman for 15 years and I've been thinking about the feasibility of designing my own reels and daylight loader to 3D print.

Thoughts?

Back "in the day" I sent my 70mm C-41 to Pacific Color which was located near Green Lake in the northern part of Seattle (I lived less than 1 mile away from the lab in the late 70's) and 70mm E-6 to Citizens in Portland, OR.

I got in touch with a couple of film pros yesterday and they are helping me out with finding darkroom equipment. One of them even called these two labs and verified that they can process the film in 16' lengths, which will do until I can find my own equipment and start stockpiling those Ilford bulk rolls.

In the seventies I had an Ikelite plexiglass underwater housing for my 500C/M, as well as my Honeywell Strobonar 710. I used the A16s backs to produce underwater superslides that were used in slide productions for a local college. The subject was Andros Island in the Bahamas, I have been there twice. I got my NASDS certification in 1974 🙂

B&W I would suggest finding a Kindermann tank, or shoot 24 exposure lengths and process in modified Paterson System 4 or JOBO Multitanks.

Will your modified reels for the System 4 tank accommodate 16' lengths of 70mm?
 
Nope I'm loading 220 film lengths in the Patterson but also in the JOBO 120/220 reel Multitanks. Good for shorter 24 exp rolls.

Kindermann and Nikor are the two 70mm tanks I'm aware of that were made for decades and can hold 70 exposure lengths. I own the Kindermann and also a rare Kindermann loading stand.

Also try German Ebay as I buy there too.

I'm a total newb with darkroom stuff. When film is loaded onto a reel, does the film have to be spaced from itself with each wrap around so it doesn't come into contact with itself? Is that the purpose of the spiral grooves in the reels? Someone recently told me it doesn't.
